1300 x flow in my locost tuning ?
Discussion
hi people im new here just a quick one about my engine in my locost super seven rep. i want to stay with a x flow engine i think as want to keep cost down.
first thing i want to know is that some one told me that i could have my 1300 x flow bourd out to a 1600 is this true
second is it worth doing or should i just buy a 1600 x flow lump
third can i use my 1300 gear box and what would be pros and cons if so
and last thing how hard is it to convert to a cosworth turbo lump ans where can i buy mounts ect
thanks terry

Not an expert on crossflows, but just bought my first one for the wifes Locost as it is eligible for our race series with a 1300 crossflow. But my research is that all cross flows share the same bore, but with diffrent strokes for diffrent sizes. So in theroy 1100,1300 1600 can be done with change of crank and new pistons for the crown height. But the heads are diffrent valve sizes..
In thery you can make an 1100 twin cam as the Lotus 1558 parts also fit across the range.
My research is you can change anything at a price, but from cost point buy a second hand engine as near the final spec as possible.
There are good books around and in print, and tuning cross glows in google turns up loads of info. My choice was to buy a 1300 Gt as astarting point as this is nearest too our final spec.
Good luck Kelvin

Terry,
The 1300 and 1600 x-flows are different blocks - despite the fact that they share the same basic bore dimension you can't restroke a 1300 to 1600 as the 1600 is a taller block.
Some background reading...
1) Tuning Four Cylinder Fords by Paul Davies (published by Speed Sport ISBN 0-85113-076-3 - you'll probably have to search eBay for a copy of one though).
2) Rebuilding & Tuning Ford's Kent Crossflow Engine by Peter & Valerie Wallage (published by Haynes ISBN 1-85010-93-9).
There are two 1600 blocks; the early 681M and the later and better 711M blocks. You can usually take these 711Ms out to 1760cc should you so wish.
As for the gearbox, the 1600 will bolt up to it as all the crossflows have the same bell-housing bolt pattern. You will need to check the size of the spigot bush in the crank though. There are also differences if you have a hydraulic or cable operated clutch too but the books listed above will explain these.
Cheers,
Rich

Just read my Cross flow book (the Peter and Valerie one). And that talks about two blocks early 70's and latter (71m) block, but does not distinguish between 1300 and 1600 Blocks, I have a 1300 on the bench for rebuild and it is a 711M Block.
I had a twin cam years ago, and I thought the 'tall' b;ock was the cross flow block as opposed to the old 1500 pre cross flow block.
Appreciate your comments since as I said I'm trying to find out all I can to rebuild the one on the bench.

1600 x/flow 711M blocks are 71 approx onwards, and are 1.5 inches taller(dont hold me to that, the memory aint what it was) than the 1100/1300 blocks, personally if you are tuning i would use a 711m block over the earlier unit(it as stronger main caps, better casting too, seem to remember the cam follower stems are fatter too)speak to www.burtonpower.com there is nowt they dont know about these units.
