Yesterday , when 100 miles from home in my Chimaera, noticed a small coolant leak and a hissing noise from somewhere near the base of the nearside of the radiator. No great jump in temperature so no damage done. Treated with radweld , filled up with water and got home , watching the guage like a hawk , but no problems .
What now ? Is it imperitive to fix /change the radiator , or is radweld a long term solution ?

Radweld is just an emergency repair and your rad will fail again at some point. If the Radweld doesn't leak the radiator will hole somewhere else (assuming it failed because of age, not something going through it).

Either get a new rad or get the old one re-cored.

Radweld (better known as a "turd&quotwink basically blocks up your rad. As OP's have said, it is a temporary fix. You may fnd after a while that you start to run into cooling issues as having it running around inside the rad reduces it's efficiency. Personally it would be a rad out job, flush and repair if possible, or replace.

An alternative called Ceelit or similar spelling, is a powder, like fine cement I guess, that works better than Radweld (that doesn't)
Kept a leaky heater matrix at bay for years in an old Onion I had

Yeah, Ce-Lit, little packet of crystals, bloody good stuff. Only ever seen it up north though.
