live axle, 350 hp
Discussion
I've just measured the Ford Explorer 8.8" I've conveniently got outside (to go in my Volvo) and it measures 150cm from disc face to disc face. The diff flange is not central, though- being off set 9cm to one side. Most have lockers and can be identified by looking at the tag. An open diff will have 3.27:1, for example, whereas the locker will have 3L27:1.

Could be usefull, can I be a pain and ask where might I source one and which way is the offset and how much ?HTH
thanks.
US Ford axles would certainly be up to the job but hardly easy to find.
So how about Volvo? Fairly common fit on hot rods in the UK, many of which run Yank V8s, they seem to be strong, come with disc brakes and some also have LSDs.
Don't know the dimensions, but at least you stand some chance of finding one in a scrapyard to measure.
Or maybe BB-Q has one going spare?
ETA, might be worth a look at the National Street Rod Association web site (UK, not US) as you might find info on sizes and ratios on there, or at least be able to ask.

Volvo is axle is probably good for 350hp, but is on the edge if you fancy drag racing it. the 1041 axle is available in the 940, standard equipment in the Wentworth model- 3.54:1 ratio. The diff is a locker though, not an LSD. Works up to 10mph or until you unload the diff by changing gear. Can be modified to lock up until much higher speeds.
I'll check the offset on the 8.8" axle tomorrow, but I believe it's the O/S that is shorter. 1996 onwards have rear discs with internal drum parking brakes, as do all the Volvos.
I got my axle from Ebay via Explorerparts.co.uk. Cost me £134 shipped to my door- bargain!
P.S. Volvo axle is about 1" wider than the 8.8" and has a central diff.

My 8.8" has the diff carrier offset slightly. Not much. My halfshafts are equal length.I'll check the offset on the 8.8" axle tomorrow, but I believe it's the O/S that is shorter. 1996 onwards have rear discs with internal drum parking brakes, as do all the Volvos.

There are lots of different width combos on these axles, although I had to widen mine by 30mm each side to suit my application. Dont recall figures though....

So,are we saying that the diffs on all the volvos as standard only lock up to 10 or so mph, or is it particular models?
IMO, that would be a very strange setup, unless there is some form of hydraulic/electric locking system.Any Volvo's of old I had ever heard of had conventional open, or limited slip diffs.
Believe me- I'm a Volvo anorak. I also have a 1041 axle outside next to my 8.8".
Do a search for Eaton G80, GM's code for it. It's a mechanical locking diff that uses a flyweight to disengage the locking device above 10mph. The Flyweight can be lightened to allow the diff to lock at higher speeds.
Note this is not a limited slip differential- it is a locking differential, i.e. no slip possible when engaged.
True LSD's were an option in all the Volvos from the 60's onwards, but are very rare. I've heard a rumour that 240 Torslanders had an LSD as standard, but have not been able to substantiate the rumour yet.
