Hi there,

I have just had my Barchetta serviced, part of which was to have Forte Flush additive put in prior to the service. I am a little worried that it was in the engine for too long.

Basically, the additive was put in on the Monday afternoon and the service carried out on the Thursday morning. Between times I drove about 150 miles at a variety of speeds. On the tuesday, after a motorway drive of about 40 miles, the car developed a rattly noise at certain engine revs. This continued through to the service, when I was advised that this would be the hydraulic tappets making the noise following the additive.

Well, the car has been serviced and drives very well, but the rattling noise remains and is driving me mad. I am now worried that the flush has done permanent damage to the engine in some way - is this possible? Was the flush in for too long?

If the flush is only supposed to be in the car fro a short time, I certainly was not advised of this by the garage.

Can anyone offer me advice on this matter please?

Didnt you read the instructions ?

I think they would usually say 10mins or so of running time, or maybe 5-10 miles.

The sort of miles you are suggesting are defo too much. But very hard to say if any damage would have been caused.

10 minutes max with no throttle input! You've no doubt damaged the hyrdraulic tappets.

You might aswell have been driving about with very little oil, all engine flush does is thins the oil making it easier to drain.

The garage uses it as part of their service routine. I suppose I should have asked more questions of the mechanic when it was put in, but I (wrongly) assumed that he knew what he was doing.

If the tappets are damaged, is it a new cylinder head required? I reckon that the garage should fund the repair, as they have clearly not followed the correct procedure for using Forte?

From the back of a new tin of Forter Motor flush :

With engine running, and at idle, add to crankcase oil.Run for 10 minutes.
drain.
Replace oil filter and refill with fresh oil.

Reckon your in trouble now.

Should not harm but is a complete waste of money when using semi or fully synthetics as they contain very good detergency.

Did the garage put it in or you?

If they garage put it in, have them pay for the damage. I've heard someone mention about having hydraulic tappets re-shimmed.

I know its not a high performance engine but... we put forte engine flush in my aunts saxo prior to a service, although working in a garage we didnt get time to do it that day... that week passed and another until we changed it, the car never ever drank any oil until we left the flush in too long, now it drinks it at quite a rate where we had to check it weekly and every two weeks top it up, she doesnt go over 3000rpm and does 100 miles a week max... personally id put it in for no longer than a few miles/minutes

What that man said. Good quality oils, change regularly.
