M/bike and car oil comparison - differences??

Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between 10w/40 car oil and 10w/40 motorbike oil? Most garages don't seem to sell m/bike oil which is annoying if you need a top up.

bike oil works with wet clutches, some car oils wont IIRC

The bike oil will have a vastly different array of additives in it.Dont use car stuff.

Some are the same but labelled differently but in most cases bike oils contain friction modifiers to prevent clutch slip.

For safety sake, you CAN use bike oils in cars but I would AVOID using car oils in bikes unless your bike does not have a wet clutch.

Thanks, I assumed there must be some difference and hence haven't taken the chance with using car oils.

Just means that I as my bike gets older and starts using oil I may have to start carrying some on the bike.

Bike oil has to act as gear oil as well as engine oil. Would not car oil break down abnormally fast in bike service? Like not leaving oil changes too long in a Mini

old hat,well past its sell by dateoils have come a long way since,i would not use Castrol R in a road going bike engine.

My bike has recommended oil changes every 4000 miles. I change it every 2000 because frequent oil changes are the easiest way to extend engine life. Therefore car oil is more than adequate for an old engine such as mine - it was designed in the mid 80's and oil has come a long way.

I currently use Tesco Value mineral oil in my FJ - £6 for 4litres, works great, never had any problems with clutch slip. For a more modern, high performance bike, I would use bike only stuff.
