i have a vauxhall omeag estate with the 2.5 turbo diesel BMW engine that i use as a towcar/trips to tip etc car, but it has an odd starting problem. my drive slopes towards the garage and if left stood 'nose down' it starts within seconds even if not started for a fortnight (4th car so not used everyday). If parked flat or 'nose up', it takes ages to start, you have to wind it over for sometime. it has always smelt 'dieselly' under the bonnet and must have some form of oil/diesel leak somewhere but must be microscopic vapour as never drips on drive and doesnt use oil or extra fuel.

any ideas gents?

Has the filter been changed recently ?

If there are any slight leaks on the diesel fuel line, it can draw in air, which would cause starting problems. There may be no visible fuel leak, as its drawing in air, as opposed to leaking fuel.

the fuel filter i assume? if so its not be changed in the two years and 9k miles ive had it, so i will take a look at that first. is it likely to be mounted in the engine bay or closer to the tank? is there only one?

Engine bay. I mention it, because sometimes when people change it, they can disturb, or incorrectly fit some o-rings, which can allow air into the system.

Although in this case, its probably not your problem.

But...I do vaguely recall when I owned a 525tds...I may have had a similar problem. I think I installed a non-return valve into the fuel line from tank to filter.
Very long time ago though.
