Can someone please give me advice as to how I go about dry sumping a Ford 302 engine….where do I start?

My main question is how do I work out how many stage pump I need? Is a 6 litre catch tank going to be enough? What else do I need to consider? Etc, etc......

Thanks in advance.

I suppose you're going to need a sump, and a scavenger pump, and an oil separator, and some sort of drive for the scavenger pump. And by the time you find somebody who can supply all that, they'll probably be able to tell you all about the rest of it.

I prefer to go from the scavenge pump through the oil cooler into the swirl pot, then into the hp pump and the engine...

The reason being if I hole the oil cooler the oil is at a lower pressure, when it gets sprayed around the engine bay !!!

Im sure the tank on my rv8 is quite a bit more than 6 litres....

Mine has 2 scavenge stages and 1 hp stage..

I only scavenge from the sump, some people add another stage and scavenge from the heads as well

Thanks for the insight everyone! I think I'll have to get the sump from the US but I was thinking about trying these guys for the pump:

Has anyone tried them?

The Volvo B234 engine came with an external oil pump, if that helps (16v 740 and 940's). Wet sump system, but it could be adapted, I suppose. If you go looking for one and find it, can you get the head off for me please (always good to have spares)? biggrin

I have a Titan 3 stage pump on my home designed and built system. They were helpful and were cheaper than Pace.

A lot of effort went into the sump. You can see pictures at these links.

I used one of the Laminova water / oil heat exchangers. This has several advantages. The water in an engine heats up quicker than the oil so the heat exchanger initially heats the oil. I can mount the heat exchanger low which is better for the C of G, it simplified the plumbing runs and I dont require an oil thermostat.

Dry sumping is complicated but I dont have to worry about oil surge.

As a tweak for some free horsepower then restrict the airflow into the engine for the scavenge system. If you can achieve 100-200mbar of depression inside the crankcase then this will give about a 2-3bhp gain

I bought a second hand system for the tuscan originally ( titan ) i think but it wouldnt fit.

I spoke to pace and they ended up having the car for a week to make up custom brackts for me and mounting the pump.

very good job and a good price for the ( fitted) pump, bracket and matched pully... They also did a very quick turn around on a pump rebuild for me after mine got damaged and covered in dry powder..

I'd def recommend talking to them

They made the pump, pulleys and brackets on my car's system and I can't praise them enough. Neil is a top guy and his knowledge of dry -sumping is immense.
