HT Cable lengths

Is there an optimum lenght for a coil lead? I am using custom lenghts of MSD 10.5mmm leads, Ideally for space, the MSD boxes and coils would be sited around 5 ft from the disrbutor, is this a problem?

I have seen cars with quite long leads, although 5ft is a lot. Dont think it should matter too much though.

But why cant it just be mounted on the engine beside the dizzy ? Is space that tight ?

The coils can be mounted near to the distributors, but the MSD will have to be mounted elsewhere. I have learned today that this set up will be ok.
(Petrol engines are a mystery to me, but learning more and more everyday!)
