After a few months of utter perfection my freebie 94 4.0 xj40 has thrown a wobbly.

One morning last week it refused to start after driving perfectly the night before. I didn't have a chance to look at it seriously for a couple of days but it kept on refusing to fire whenever I gave it a go. I eventually noticed that when I turned on the ignition and waited for the warning lights to go out the Transmission Warning light remained on.

Having scoured the internet I decided it was bizarrely enough possibly a throttle position sensor problem. Last night I decided I had to have a look at it. Sadly the connector on mine doesn't match the picture in the Haynes manual. The manual says it is round with six pins ( as is the one on fleabay..) - mine is rectangular with 6 pins. So I couldn't test the voltages were correct.

I wd40'd the connector and put it back together. I then noticed it very occasionally fired on one cylinder or so. I floored the throttle and it started immediately and dropped to perfect idle and the transmission warning light went off.

It started normally a couple of times today so I took it to work. It started first time when I left work - played up at a petrol station - and played up 10 minutes ago when I went out to test it. Each time starting fine on full throttle.

So -
does the throttle position sensor diagnosis sound reasonable?
Does anyone have a diagram of which wires are reference voltage and signal for a rectangular plugged sensor so I can prove it? Or have a found the wrong connector??
Meanwhile do you reckon I can keep using it or is there any major downsides to my workaround?

thanks!
