Posted in General Gassing but it probably should have been here...

I just screwed up and connected the jump leads the wrong way round when attempting to start my quad bike from my tractor. They are both 12v systems, and the quad doesn't have fuel injection but does seem to have electronic ignition.

The main fuse blew, but with that replaced the quad is showing no signs of life whatsoever.

Any advice? I am better at the clanky bits than the sparky ones! How much damage have I caused?

Cheers,

FT.

Probably dead, many components don't like the back flow.

I'd start with the ignition module if you tried to crank it over with it connected to the wrong way.

When you say 'showing no signs of life', do you get any ignition lights/headlights etc working, or do you mean it just won't start but all the other electrics are working?

If everything else is working ok, but it just won't fire up then it's certainly the ECU that has been fried. However, if it is completely electrically dead, I'd be looking for some other damage first.

You were right, there was a second fuse which appears to have protected the rest of the system. It was a lot better hidden than the first - and once changed it all seems to be working fine!

Tom.
