Chrysler V8 (Bristol) - the coil has two small "pots" attached by a short wire to the +ve terminal and bolted to earth. Are these likely to be noise suppressors or capacitors like you find inside a distributor?

no idea...a picture might help.

They are condensers. My Volvo 164 has them to bypass the ballast resistor to AC.

Of course a capacitor/condenser could be serving the function either of improving the operation of the ignition system or of suppressing radio interference, a bit like a stick could serve the function of propping something up or poking someone in the eye wink

It will be for the former purpose, though, I reckon. It is bypassing the ballast resistor to AC so as not to waste spark energy... and in so doing it will also reduce the voltage excursion on the coil terminal and reduce the interference generated.

So it's propping something up AND poking someone in the eye biggrin
