Would it be possible (easy?) to make up an emissions tester using a lambda sensor and a laptop?

Has anyone done this? Are there any programmes out there to download onto a laptop? What electronic circuit would be needed? Is it worth it - are there any cheap testers out there?

I'm looking at porting my own cylinder head for my MPi mini. These are known to have problems passing the MOT when modified. I'd rather have the ability to check the emissions without repeatedly going through an MOT! (And it'll be handy if I could check the mixture while driving, i.e. make sure its not running too lean at high revs / wide throttle openings etc)

Cheers

Simple answer, is no.

There are plenty of wideband AFR systems available, that will allow you to check Lambda, and that your AFR's are at a sensible level, which should bare a close relation to CO.

But thats it. You would need a proper 4/5 gas analyser for a full MOT check.

But in general, if the engine is running fine, you dont have a mad camshaft, then if your AFR's are at a sensible value, then the rest should be ok. If it isnt, there is a pretty major problem somewhere.

You could buy a zeitronix lambda with a meter for about £200 and just wire to the battery..

or buy a 4 gas analyser on Ebay for a few hundred quid..
