when it gets up to about 25 mph there is a knocking noise from the front it is very even and gets faster as you get faster it also does it in neutral when rolling seems to be on the off side i have changed the drive shaft, still the same seems to get a bit louder when you go round a left hand bend any ideas cheers peter

No point randomly changing parts on the front end.

Get the car in the air [axel stands] and then try to find the problem. Shake the wheel, spin the wheel.

But as general ideas - loose wheel bolts, dhirt shield on the disc catching?

If it does it in neutral with the engine off it is obviously related to the wheel side as opposed to engine/gearbox.

Wheel bearing (highly unlikely).
Loose wheel nuts/bolts (very likely)
Cv joint (possible)
Disk rattling in caliper (I'll eat my hat if it's that problem on this car).

My money is on a cv joint about to collapse or loose wheel nuts.

I'd sort it soon before either fails, your son won't enjoy the ride if they do.

How does it vary with the amount of lock applied? What happens when manoeuvring at parking speeds?

Had a similar prob. Turned out to be wheelbearings.

I was quite surprised as there was no play or noise when on jacks.

I am thinking wheel bearing too.

To be honest in line with the other thread this could be caused by a buckled wheel.

Also check a section of tread hasn't chunked off. I had this once on an old tyre and it foxed me for a while as every time I stopped it was on the missing bit, it had a vibration through the wheel and a thumping noise.
