Just to be different and assuming starting from scratch, i would fit a new 4.6 block, stage 4 heads, 218 cam or similar, ported induction with proper trumpets, = 275 bhp & 290 lb ft or fit twin throttle plenum for around an extra 10-15 bhp.
This spec would offer the best durabilty / value for money.

I am assuming starting with nothing, or needing to buy a new engine, the 4.6 is about 1/2 the price and is more suited to high mileage /touring use , have heard of one doing 250,000 miles, yes the 5.0L + configurations will offer more torque but also need rebuilding sooner,
If starting with a 500 bottom end i would refurbish it and fit decent heads induction etc.

There is a 4.2 Rover V8 with a supercharger on it complete with ecu on ebay for £800 at the moment. vendor recons 300+bhp............just a thought

Is there? Can't seem to find it. If the supercharger installation is half decent that's a very good price.

No wonder I couldn't find it - its sold! Not the ideal setup, but pretty good at that price.

sorry Pete thought there was more time left to bid, had an email from the seller this afternoon it appears it was a Dennis Priddle conversion on a Range Rover.
