02 Plate Megane Engine light

Hi all,
Quick question on behalf of a friend of mine.

It's a 02 plate Renault megane coupe (2.0l), the Engine light is permanently on.
it stutters at idle (indicating a mis-fire), and won't go any faster than 50. Before we resort to getting onto Renault, I thought I'd ask to see if anyone has experiecnce (or seen) similar.
It's not a high-milage and won't have been driven hard.

Would guess a dodgy sensor or bad connection somewhere. Management system will be restricting engine power if it detects something not reading OK.
Plugging it into Renault dealer's computer probably quickest way to find out to find out what's up - once you know you could always make the repair yourself.

Meganes are known to have an issue with faulty igition coils.
Made by Sagem in france they are being replaced with Nippon Denso items made in Japan.
