Covered 4250 miles from new and used 2 1/2 litres. Should I be concerned? Car is the Polo GTI 1.4 180.

That's a hell of a lot of oil.

I'd be having words with VW.

I agree it is a lot.

Possible causes? Would the main culprit be piston rings or might there be other causes (blocked oil breather?)? The car is not dropping oil.

Possible causes arent for you to worry about ( nor do I know, although piston ring issues are a possibility )

it's a brand new car, and it should not be doing it.

The only thing you need to worry about, is what courtesy car they might give you and how long it will take to be rectified.

Reconditioned engines use 0.5, max 1l oil on the running in period. If there is no problem with the machine work (khm...) oil thirst goes away as the rings settle in, at the first few hundred miles.

An engine that is burning oil at 4K is a faulty one and should be fixed/replaced on warranty.

A few months ago I was informed about another new car which used huge amount of oil. After dismantling it, it turned out to be a cylinder honing problem. The engine was overbored in warranty, which solved the problem.

I am not telling You that the same problem is with Your car, but something is faulty there for sure.

1st thing to do it give it a proper thrashing, this will either:

1) fix the issue if it's bore/ring glazing

or

2) blow it up completely, resulting in a new car under warranty.

Thats a WIN-WIN situation ;-)

This is a known issue with these engines a colleague at work has a Fabia Vrs with the same engine & is going in for an oil consumption test, they have a fixed test that if it fails the engine is replaced!!

I believe the test involves a 60 mile rd test so make sure it has plenty of fuel in it before you drop it off wink

The dealer is telling me that, as the manual says consumption is up to a litre per 1200 miles, it is "in tolerance". This was followed by some twaddle that by 6,000 miles (only another 1500 to go) it will have settled down. I told him I thought he was talking rubbish as the consumption is constant i.e. not getting any better.

I will run it to 6,000 and if it is still using oil at the present rate will start to really jump up and down.

Is giving it a thrash really going to help?

Thoughts on whether an independent inspection would help?

What type of oil are you using in it? If it's on synthetic before running the bores in properly it might never do so. I'd be tempted to put a mineral oil in, give it some hard use for a while and see if it improves before going back to synthetic. If it's already too late then a rehone and new rings ought to allow it to run in again properly unless there's some basic design fault with those pistons and rings.

No good engine can burn that lot oil. Especialy not modern units. Sooner or later the oil will kill the cat and o2 sensor.

Try to ask another VW dealer just to see the reaction.

I'm toping-up with the same synthetic oil that the car came with.

I have written to the Dealer Principal locally where the car gets serviced expressing my refusal to be fobbed-off. I have also copied-in the dealer who sold the car having bought through an internet based broker.

I may ring the service manager of the original dealer to see if he things the local dealer is pulling my chain.

There's your problem then. Do as I suggested previously. Read this.

Is it too late now that the car has done circa 4500 miles?

If you use anything other than the oil grade specified by VW, you will invalidate the warranty.

(if they find out, that is)

My oil consumption was quite high initially, then it levelled off a little, but it still uses way too much IMO. I have to top it up about 500-750ml every three tanks of fuel. There are posts about this on several threads re this engine. I have noticed that my tail pipe is very sooty, and I've noticed that it's now chuffing like a diesel if I glance in the mirror on kickdown.

I have a feeling that this is not a very robust drive train, too many posts in too many forums all over the web about it.

What with the wk 7 spd DSG, the oil consumption, the way it drinks fuel, the lack of driver involvement and its abject failure as a drivers car, I wouldn't recommend this chassis to anyone, regardless of the badge you can get it with.

It's all a bit st and I'm very disappointed.

Checked my oil this morning, as I've done a few miles over the last two BH weekends, it was off the bottom of the dipstick. It took a little over a full litre to get it back to the top of the hatchings on the dipstick. 869 miles since it was last topped off. Time to contact my dealer I reckon, as that's more than the 'allowance' in the handbook.

i'm having the same problems with my GTI. I've had the piston rings replaced four weeks ago and the oil light came on again on Tuesday after 700 miles, clearly wasn't those that were causing the problem! Smoke also blows out when i put my foot down and exhaust pipe is sooty 5 minutes after cleaning it, how can this be a low emmission, economical car with the amount of rubbish it's spewing out and the oil it's guzzling?!

well my 11 plate polo gti is currently doing about circa 1000 miles to a litre of engine oil, the car has done about 8600 miles and has not settled down, i think i will need to speak to volkswagen.

And this is suppossed to be a modern economical engine, my arse...........my old b16a2 honda engine never used a drop and it was ragged to death everywhere i went, time to wave goodbye to the polo i think once i have spoken to volkswagen

Hello, i've got a Seat Ibiza FR with the same engine but 150hp.
Here in Italy we are many with this problem!
I've done only 1100 kms and it burnt 0.5kg of oil.
Many people with have been replaced the engine...but in some cases the problem persists.
