Just in case you guys were interested and didn't spot it, the BMW diesel enthusiast WelshBeef is trying to tell everyone how slow your cars are! hehe

Bmw diesels are awesome and faster than ours per cc but sound like taxis ( I've had e36 325tds/ couple of 330d's & 120d)

I am glad red griff does not post here anymore. Very unjustifiably opinionated. I don't think I will post in my thoughts in that thread purely cause I think it's garbage. How about if I went into general gassing and said "imprezas are slow" I personally think all these slating topics should be banned.

I just feel sorry for the poor sods that are lending him the cars like the VXR8 and E55 to test drive. He's as likely to buy one as I'm likely to buy a Veyron. His love of BMW dervs is legendary.

I think the dealers will quickly tire of him.

problem is a standard vxr8 isnt that quick for how bigger engine it has but there is also nothing in its price range that offers so much either. Some people are also bliknered and insist a turbo car is faster just because they can feel the turbo kick in rather than a smooth n/a engine.

Yep, we all told him to get the VXR so he went and got an 04 CV8 and then complained it was too slow WTF...

Who the fk cares?

Fast doesn't always mean fun. If I wanted a stupidly fast car, I'd have bought something with a giant turbo I could turn up to 11.

One thing I've learnt in my short car history is that is that outright power figures only show a small picture. I'd rather have a 400bhp, N/A with razor sharp delivery, flexibility and response than a gummy, spiky turbo; I've driven some modern turbos, and despite what every turbo-fan says, you CAN tell. I had an RS2 with proper old school turbo delivery too...quicker than the R8, but hard to keep on the boil.

Which is why I like the linear, any-gear, sharp responses of the big V8, and the same reason I loved my mental GTA V6 when everyone else was buying Golf GTis, VXRs and STs. Apparently I should have bought one for the sole reason of them being easier to tune...

I could bang on and on about my GTA and that V6. By far the most expensive car I've owned, but I loved every minute of it.

The VXR8 kinda reminds me of it, in a way - its the outsider; a car dominated by the engine with bags of character and charm that most people overlook but ultimately admire.

The OP of that other thread is somewhat right. You'd expect the VXR8 to be quicker when looking at it and reading about it's 6.2 v8... Not sure how it compares to the Fiat turbo, but can only tell you that it's light years faster than the new Toyota GT86 (put to paces head to head on a private road).

Overall, not offended, everyone is allowed their opinion right?

I certainly don't consider a car that can crack 0-60 in under 5 seconds as slow.

The problem seems to be people who get used to turbos and that shove that they give over a relatively short rpm range, are comparing the VXR8 to that. They have forgotten what it's like to have what feels like unlimited linear power all the way past their precious, and limited 155mph.

Let the muppets stick to their German twin turbo diesels, their DPFs and high pressure injectors, their 10,000 psi fuel pumps and their run-flat tyres.

There'll be more petrol for us wink

I figure that 0-60 in around five seconds is plenty fast enough, especially for such a big car.. There's loads of talk about tuning smaller turbo engined cars. Thing is, if you do it with an LS3 you end up with an epically fast car that's of little use on the road. Most yank V8 installations deliver relaxed cruising and easy performance. Any 2-litre turbo that delivers the same performance figures is working very hard indeed. A good example of this is the little drag prepared Corsas vs. our VXR8s at PVS - quicker, but hardly equals.

A friend has a chipped 320d, and although it does feel like it pulls quite hard, and is relatively quick, there's just so many gear changes...

Always fun to use 3rd gear off a ~40mph roundabout, it just gathers speed faster and faster, I love that constant surge of POWAARRRR biggrin
