The last straw was when a E92 M3 pulled my pants down approx 10 times in a row in a drag race, and it would KILLED a VXR around a track. although the price difference is quite a bit.
..and of course, that was the fault of the car, and not the driver? looks like you bought the car for the wrong reason`s and did no homework on the cost of running one.
But this is just my opinion xx

I have PLENTY of vids to show i can drive a car quite competently xxx
But just not a VXR8? I've just looked at your profile again, and reminded myself that you come from a performance Ford background. The price of the HSV car parts will have been quite a culture shock for you. Unfortunately, that is the difference between old and new, and also between relatively large and small production volumes.
In 20 years time, VXR8 discs will be a lot closer to the prices you're used to for Cosworth Sierras. They've already dropped considerably in the 4 years that we've had Aussie motors.

The price of Vxr8 parts would be a shock for any owner , the suspension arms should be cheap as they was 5 years behind the times when the car was released I've just looked at your profile again, and reminded myself that you come from a performance Ford background. Honestly, and dont shoot me down. I think they are boring to drive, too sophisticated and too much of a 'risk' to own. Big bills, not parts avail. unless you go to monkfish etc. For a 430hp car, they are heavy and slow. I guess iv'e just been spoiled with light cars and lots of power.
I would say though that they are great as weekender and sound the nuts
Shortest time iv'e ever owned a car, lol
Try owning a sl55, my r8 has not been that bad.they are quite robust, servicing can be done by a competent mechanic as they are not complex cars.mine is plenty fast if a little lacking in the handling department, although that could be me not being good enough for the car.I would say though that they are great as weekender and sound the nuts

I sold mine because it was boring at anything but full throttle and that got boring too.I would say though that they are great as weekender and sound the nuts

I'd get another in the future but at anything other than romping it, it was dull to drive
Stig I'm supprised at that comment as mine is bloody great now it's had some work done. Admittedly the exhaust is whisper quiet but that sort of adds to the appeal. The power delivery is sooooo much smoother than the old Ro as well but it still has the massive get up and go of a SC car so short shifting is very satisfying.
It was a weird feeling to have but yes the car ended up boring me.
When you were using throttle and the noise (and especially after the coilovers) the car drove brilliantly and I really do miss it for the shock and awe. But at the same time it was dull when being used on the commute (mine was a daily) and it was a pain, the steering numb and the wheel felt like it would suit a double decker bus. Then there was the lack of a few essentials such as memory seats. I just got tired of driving it
I haven't got tired of the e39 despite it being too conservative for my liking its just nice to drive all the time.
Don't get me wrong, I would have another one but the problem is on my drive is a car I can never see me selling.
If I had my time again I would fit a memory seat function (I require it due to my disabilities), would sharpen up steering or at least poly bush and I might even adjust the rear gearing.
I wouldn't supercharge it though as big hp isn't my thing. But memory is a funny thing too, its 3 years nearly since I sold it and getting back in one might be like having sex with your first true love.

Every car on the road is more than likely boring & lifeless around town and cruising at 70 - 80 mph.
Cars only really come alive when you play with the throttle, some more than others.
I love the fact that i have a big lazy V8 6.2 under my bonnet, OK, it`s not 911 Turbo 4 quick, but it`s long legged, full of torque & pulls like a fecking train, & then some!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For the money, i don`t think you can beat it really, all that power, torque, sound. I think it`s great.
M3`s, RS4`s, etc etc etc, there every where, lovely cars, don`t get me wrong, but come on.
I used to own a 911, lovely car, but my VXR8 makes me smile more, takes me back to my TVR Griff 500 days

Dave I know what you are saying but most of our time is at boring driving and that's where I found the car lacking (at the time). I loved mine, I loved how exclusive it actually was. We stayed in Davos in 2009 and stayed (by accident) at the top hotel. Everyone there were in exotica and all came to talk to us. Same happened when we hit the south of France.
Brilliant shock and awe car. I guess I'm getting old, I miss my old XJ now for work horse duties, but the e39 just fits like a glove (though I now have to do the bloody power steering and maf's!)
Just saying I understand the OP's perspective but to date the two cars I've owned the longest are my old Monaro and my VXr8 as they were just right
