Oil consumption 6.0L monaro

That sounds a lot, but could it be that you are diligently filling it up as soon as the level leaves 'max' on the dipstick?
I've often found that engines find their own level, and anything above that will get pushed out quickly, but once it reaches that level, no more oil is burnt. My last Alpina (which are notorious for having a drink problem) would use 1/2 litre from full for every tank of juice, but if you left it at 1/2 a litre below max, it would take 1500 miles to drink the next 1/2 litre.
My theory is that as the dipstick is an approximation, it could be that some dipsticks are wrong, and you're actually over-filling the engine when following the dipstick guide. Of course, this wouldn't be the case if your car hasn't always been like this. Glazed bores (constant speed use) or gummed up piston rings (lack of use) could easily account for a sudden change in oil consumption.

Most modern manufactures state 1L per 1000 miles is normal oil consumption..try explaining that to a VAG owner who's longlife oil was £17 a liter !!!
Our Porsche handbook states 1L per 600miles is 'normal' Thankfully it uses nothing like that. The VXR8 we had didn't require any top ups in the 8000 miles we had it.
Lots of short journeys and stop start driving will dilute the oil and make it burn off easier too. So driving style will also influence oil consumption. Personally I wouldn't panic about 1L per 3000 miles, although it is out of the ordinary for these cars form what I know.

Mine has 125,000 miles on and uses about 1 litre/2500 miles, but most of this consumption happens when it's taken for a thrash or sat on the motorway for a long time. Pottering to work and back doesn't really use any oil.
It has used this all its life though from when I first got it at 50,000 miles.
