Every new car I have owned I have given it about a 500km grace period, and then driven it like it will be dr. Generally after the first oil change, just to make sure that there aren't any bits of metal in it. Each to their own I guess... main reason is that I don't want it to bed in and then go through a secondary bedding in when I started to plant my foot.
I wouldn't run the engine in to softly. Give it some highish revs and load but for short periods. Vary the revs and load a lot. Accellerate the car and then lift off. You want the piston rings to experience some high cylinder pressures so they bed into the walls of the cylinder bores. If it was mine, I'd consider the running in period to be more or less done in the first couple of hundred miles but I'd still be respectful to the engine for a few more hundred miles.
Running engines in gently doesn't allow the rings to bed in properly and then you get less power, burn more oil (ls1's are prone to this) and you can get bore wash in extreme situations.

Hi Shaun, how's it going?
I am well pleased with mine. I was going to go for the VXR but think that the extra 7k for it is a rip-off. When mine is run in and I need more power I will go to see Chris at WRC in Silverstone (ex G-Force!!!)
My Evo 7 was about 373 bhp and pretty quick but I reckon my Monaro would keep up with it in a straight line and eventually overtake it when you hit 100mph+.
The best thing is the feel of luxury compared to the Evo. I test drove M3's, 330ci's, M5's and I can honestly say that the Monaro beats them all hands down. It's like driving a £50k+ car but for only £30k.
Do it mate !!!
