It's true. I bought a Range Rover P38 4.6. My husband said not to, but, oh well, that doesn't matter! ;-)

It's mechanically excellent, with no real issues, but I was expecting it to be luxurious, quiet and far more economical to run. LPG is used as much as possible, but the 95L tank only gives me a range of 210 miles ( I know it doesn't take the full 95 L, but fills to roughly 80%). I was advised 300 miles was the norm.

All the suspension airbags are good, as is the compressor, but in all honesty, the ride is less than plush and it bumps down the road with rattles aplenty.

I love the adjustable height suspension (especially as it gives me a safe view over the Devon hedgerows), and the 4x4 traction is great. But that's it.

What could I replace it with?

Do any other SUV's have adjustable height suspension? Is 35mpg realistic, or am I dreaming?

I definitely have buyers remorse, and I hate my husband being right! fk!

35mpg in a range rover 4.6 - biggrin best joke of the year!
even with LPG (usually lower actual MPG, but quoted as equivalent on price as c. double what you get) is unlikely...
I had that engine in a classic and got as low as 4mpg - top was c. 15mpg - 17 if very lucky!
I have the 4.2 in my current classic and get around 15
I had a P38 with the diesel engine and the best I got was c. 28mpg

if you have still got a 20 gallon tank then at 15mpg you should get 300 miles - so that bit sounds right, but if you have LPG then might you have a smaller tank?

as for suspension - on modern (pothole covered) roads, not much give you a good ride, but yes, you should be getting a lovely floaty ride, so if not then there could be something wrong...

As a serial Land Rover owner, I would look for a Disco 3 TDV6. Get one with over 100k miles so it has the important cam belt service and lower suspension arms replaced. They have adjustable air suspension and they are super comfy. 25 mpg average is normal. Just make sure you get one that's been loved and well maintained, they are better built than the P38 but still complex, heavy and getting old.

Why would you
A - Buy a P38 and express surprise that it's st and rattly
B - Ever, ever expect 35mpg from it? It'll get half that, roughly.

At least you didn't buy the pathetic 2.5 DSE though!

While it still moves and behaves itself stop driving, get an ad up, and punt it on to the first person who makes you a half sensible offer.

Buy anything else, you could close your eyes and stick a pin in a copy of autotrader (if such a thing still exists?) and the chances of you picking a worse ownership prospect are zero. These things are the absolute nadir of LR models.

Sounds like there's something wrong with your P38. When they are working correctly they are like driving about in a chesterfield three-piece suite. I had one years ago and the only cabin noise was the squeak of leather on leather, which was rectified with a bit of Mr Sheen. In some ways they are nicer than later iterations of the Range.

Save up some more money and buy a newer shape 4.4ltr petrol L322 Range Rover (2002 onwards). Chalk and cheese in comfort and refinement levels compared with the P38.

I've had two L322s and there is something a bit mini-bus about them compared to the P38. The 4.4 engine is a lot better though.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I should have qualified the 35mpg...I meant in comparative terms taking the 59p per L cost of LPG, etc.

I'll give it a clean and move it on ASAP.

Any other suggestions regarding the next steer? How about an early Cayenne S? ;-)

I have a 4.4 petrol L322 Rangie with LPG. On a run, keeping at 60 ish, I can get 35MPG equivalent with a light foot. Mixed commute/A road, I get about 30 equivalent, but I'm paying 55p/l.

It sounds like your suspension is tired, which is not a surprise on a P38. The air suspension is only the springs, the shocks (struts) inside are probably knackered, as are suspension bushes. If it's rattling too, deffo look at bushes.

Also with the suspension on "high" your ride quality will change. Tyres and pressures can also make quite a difference.

I don't know how many other SUV's have adjustable height suspension, but my money would go on a L322 RR. I got an average of 34mpg from mine on lpg (relative costs, etc).

As for Porsche Cayenne? Possible....not sure about the cost of purchase though.

I've driven three Porsche Cayennes and thought all were horrible. I just didn't see what they were all about.
