Monaro petrol tank strap
Discussion
I have now made the two side ones in steel , the middle one is more difficult due to its design it wedges in one end rather than bolts in , so is probably easier to buy from the fish , i took the aluminium one off and put a steel one in its place , with all the difficulties around fitting aluminium it worked out better and stronger doing it in steel , they are a bit of a fiddle to make but in simple terms , a 2mm or so piece of steel , the width plus length varies then a hole in each end job done , when you take the old one off then you realise how wrotten it really is

If its going to be steel now, then get them galvanized or other long term coating then you wont be renewing them again in a few years.Ade
I have had a set of three stainless steel straps made up and are in storage in the garage , i can get more done , it’s not a quick turn around to get them made up , plus you need to buy your own rubber strips but they is fairly easy to source, so if any one is interested in buying them please pm me , the straps are for an monaro o4 big boot cv8
In August my good lady mentioned she had noticed 'something big hanging down', when questioned further I discovered that she was talking about the car ( I was a little disappointed ).
On inspection, I was presented with this on the left.
And this on the right.
So I bodged them with a combination of bolts and garden wire. There are no pictues of this as it's something I'm not proud of quite frankly. The last car I attacked with garden wire was a Ford Cortina which didn't like it's exhaust, I was young and foolish at the time. Nowadays I have no such excuse.
After enquiries about replacements ( thanks vxr2010 for all your efforts ) I ordered a set from Aus.
Then I waited. Then it was September all of a sudden.
So I finally ran out of time for Parcelfarce to deliver my replacement straps from aus. Customs had sat on them for a week and then once they'd got bored of staring at them, decided I'd have to pay £30.55 if I'd like them. Once paid they handed them over to the guys in red vans, who rather than deliver them on Saturday for which i'd paid extra, my absolute last possible day for getting this done, they took my £12 and all went home.
As I'm a bit of a pessimist, I'd already gone to B&Q and got hold of some builders band.
These are the cut off excess lengths. For anyone who wants to do the same, the label is pictured so you know what to get.
To my surprise 3 of the 4 bolts came out with no great effort, the 4th on the left hand rear had to be persuaded to leave with an angle grinder.
Here are the original straps with my hand bent temorary replacements.
Left hand side
Right hand side.
After all that, the fitting was relatively straightforward. The pre cut holes in the strap are M10 sized, so I only had to open out the M12 bolt hole for the left rear.
RH side
LH side
And before you ask, yes, that's a random wheel nut on the left rear. It was the only M12 I'd got at 8PM on a Saturday night, given that I'd reduced the original to brown dust.
And the job was dome.......Until I get the proper parts which I'll protect before they go on.

I’ve been trying to push my source of straps but the place they are made is at the moment closed , if i hear more i will update the post , the worse strap to do is the middle one , don’t use aluminium but stainless steel or normal steel will work easily for both outer straps , careful you don’t break the earthing wire petrol tank side , i think my steel was 1.8 mm thick , i’m hoping the guy who builds them comes through but not holding my breath , i have spare metal in the garage from doing mine if any one struggles locally i’m in herts
They should be a more or less straight bolt on , they will be a copy of what i have on my car now , which was made up as my old ones were wrotten , you will need to use the old sections of rubber or buy a strip of it ,which can be bought on amazon , they will be functional and do what they are supposed to , they may or may not be stainless but they will just need a bit of paint on them , cost will be sensible the reason i need to know numbers is to keep the cost down so he does a bulk build , he will make a set and then tell me the cost
