If you own a Monaro which is either standard or modified, to certain a group of people ( like me for example ) it really doesn't matter, you either get the V8 muscle car thing or you don't.
I often feel the Monaro was born out of its time, it kind of occupies a twilight world all of its own.
It came long after the original muscle cars had disappeared and straight into a world of fuel economy and polical correctness, which lets be honest is a really crap place to be.
Anyhoo...overall the Monaro did pretty well for itself, and if you own one think of yourself as a keeper of the flame....a road warrior...or a......OK that's enough....

You could say that it was late but it could also be called a rebirth of the muscle car, because at the time it was released the mustang was pretty crap and the camaro was gone and it came back in 2002 as did the mustang rebirth, The VXR badge is really only Vauxhalls top range performance badge so they still had the CV8 but just put the VXR badge on like other models, Yes I know about the HSV and Holden argument but as you said Vauxhall did bring them here

I love my fat Calibra V8.
Or is it an V8 Omega coupe?
Vauxhall? Holden? HSV? Who cares. All are products of GM.
Like many Monaro owners, we have one because we want one, not because we can't afford something else. And that speaks volumes about these cars and how they make you smile.
As said many times by others too, every time I drive mine its an event inducing a big smile across my face!

If you search hard enough back in this forum you will see Dyno numbers from a VXR500 of 385rwhp. The same as my cammed LS1 at the time.
Worth £45k, nah. I wouldnt want to pay over NA price for it personally. It will need some work to make it robust. They came with no intercoolers for a start. Stock exhaust too from memory etc..

That really doesn't answer my question? I am a big fan of the oval badge by the way and anything cosworth deserves respect.
My point is you made a statement that all vxr 500's where we'll short of power etc
I assume you are an ex owner or have driven one and were disappointed in the car itself.
I have driven many cars and as yet haven't been to find anything that is as exciting as a charged Monaro in a straight line full stop,
A properly charged Monaro George really is a weapon which is why they will appreciate.
re being a fan of the oval badge lucky u didnt admit that in australia stu .. u would have been disowned by now !!!My point is you made a statement that all vxr 500's where we'll short of power etc

Probably true, but the ford cars were my first in the 80s I loved my Capri 2.8.I honestly though wouldn't swap my Monaro for anything, it's a keeper for as long as I can drive.
Love the Australian car scene by the way.

Love this! I'd like to think I'll hold on to mine. I reckon the older they get, the cooler they'll become. And new large engine cars like ours are pretty much finished meaning the remaining ones will become more fascinating with time.
Hmmm,
As the owner of a 'genuine' VXR500, I guess I get to comment in amongst all of this negativity.
I like the idea that the car is authentic and has a history - and I did get the chance when I bought it (whilst I had a 'standard; Monaro VXR 6.2) to go for a version with 'better' bits such as an Intercooler etc.
It's not just about performance or best - do we think that a Ferrari 250 LM is worth £13.6 million! (And no, I'm not comparing my car to a Ferrari).
It's about how much you desire the thing - and I desired a VXR500 - and was lucky enough to get hold of one.
TBH, I don't really care that someone is selling one for £40k as I didn't buy it for the chance it might appreciate. Are we forgetting the phrase "I just want one".
Whilst it is really wonderful to hear all of the negative comments and reasons why folk wouldn't buy one - I think we may be missing the point . Here's me thinking that this forum was for car enthusiasts.
Best regards,
Ian - a very delighted person to be the proud owner of a Monaro VXR 500.
