For the record gents, my direct rant/winge at a certain individual was not based on this topic alone, more the cumlative effect of his posting to date and the numerous private emails relating to that persons conduct on the HSV forum that I have in my inbox.

Point made (I hope)and lets get back to good arguments and debates relating to Oz manufactured GM marques.

Excellent intro to the differences between the LS1 & LS2 engines by "Boosted LS1", and he should know

For a more detailed inside look in to the LS2 engine and it's differences over the LS1, point your browsers at this very informative article:

Comm SS,

That is an interesting and informative article but it doesn't tell the whole story. The blocks aren't really the same. The ls2 probably has the weakest block thus far, due to the larger bores. As said, GM siamesed them and also raised the block floor to address this issue but it is a weakness imho. The ls7 will also have a weakness in this department.

The ls2 has smaller bearings on the water pump which has less flow so that seems like a cost cutting venture. As for the oil pans, well I have ls2 pans here and the gull wing pans. I think they are definately skimping with the ls2 pan. It's quite ordinary and they could have fitted trap doors to it but didn't. The big wing pan is 2 piece and quite complex (read costly. The ls2 pan will certainly fit more vehicles but I prefer the big wing item.

With all this progress I just wonder what GM are working on now. There's talk about the 'blue devil' but I reckon even that is old hat and out dated.

Mike - any idea what the LS7 is massed on - I know it is partially hand finished and v.trick.

The vette guys are creaming themselves over the new Z06 - Rightly so!

Sorry John but I don't understand the question, could you rephrase it please.

I've already seen some of the ls7 stuff and it's a massive leap forwards. The heads are unreal and 3 fingers easily fit into the inlet ports which are higher up the flange. The cnc machining is something to behold. I don't like the pistons though (cast) and that seems a bit cheap especially when everything else is so good. The rod ends are wedged where they fit in between the narrowed piston bosses and that looks strange.

My preferance will be to use ls7 heads but not all the rest of the gubbins. I won't use the ls7 block.

Sorry to confuse - my typing is getting worse!

You answer most of it right there.

Cast Pistons! Barking (presume mine are then!)

So the LS6 seem like the strongest block? The machining to get the big pistons in must be a bit special. But have read about some specialist atht have been doing the same 427 size on LS1 and 6 block - seems very specialist work as pushing the size of the block.

So an LS6 with LS7 heads and forged piston + a cam and highlift rockers fo rthe real deal Nuts motor.

I don't think I'll need it at 1100kg!

The performance of mine so far (on approx 2/3 revs when warm is mine blowing - way above a Chimera 500) - and I am running it it! - Have to get rev counter and a few lights sorted though.

Anyone know a Chevy / GM dealer in the south that could plug in their diagnostic tester to get trouble codes - MIL light is on - have to give these to the specialist in US and then they will tell us how to get this reset. Rev counter is an issue with going through some decoder type module - wiring stuff.

Hello Jon,

Imho the LS1 has the strongest stock block followed by the LS6. I'm not to sure about the ls2 block but it must be ok for production use. I don't like it's siamesed liners.

As for your pistons, thay are cast by mahle. Quite nice but no extra reserves in the strength dept. If you detonate the motor you may crack a piston and the liner as well. You'rs should have the tefloned skirts.

I'm on with a 427 now but it's very early days. I'm going with a Darton block and LS7 heads plus my own ls7 cast manifold. There are some Darton details on my site. I think the Darton block is way stronger then the c5r item mainly because the liners are so thick, plus you can replace the wet liners should one get damaged. Some people are dry sleeving the ls2's but again, I don't think they will be good enough for a max effort motor. There's not enough meat around the liners.

Oh, glad to hear you finally got it sorted. The smile must say it all

Dartons all very nice, but a tad pricey. I think a stock LS6 block, perhaps with a stroker kit, and as much boost as it can take will be plenty, and a lot cheaper !

If block strength was really that much of a concern, Id just buy an iron block. Yes its heavier, but they are very cheap, and very strong, and reboring them isnt a worry.

Hear what you're saying Steve but I'm thinking of 427 or ls7 comparisons here. The c5r block is well expensive and the stock liners on it or an lsx are very weak. They will split easily with detonation, I have a new block with a split liner here. A stroker in a stock bore should be ok though

ignore my last ppl was just messing, nothing ever stops changing in the car market due to cost, research, customer demands, legislation etc. Just remember it don't matter if u have a 5.7 or 6.0, if it's totally standard or modified to hell if it's Vauxhall, Holden, VXR or HSV there are a few lucky lucky ppl here who have a real car with a real engine with a sound to scare the cr@p out of most other drivers & i'm only a teensy bit jealous <cue sound of gnashing teeth>. Who has the oldest Monaro here? just curious cos my gf's neighbour has a 1970 GTS & i think it looks ugly as hell but he loves it to death & takes it to shows, keeps it in his garage while his '03 Monaro lives on the drive.

The old 454 would be a step backwards IMO. Too heavy, too thirsty, too big. It might make some power, but at the expense of everything else.
The LSx in its many forms is capable of producing all the power anyone could ever need in a road car.
All it needs is lots of boost ;-)

I agree, I have a pair of 454's in the boat and I would glady swap them for a couple of LSx's

I have deliberately left it a few weeks for certain people here to get their toys back in their prams.
Then retrieve their dummies.

My original post that caused so much resentment I will repeat.
'The article on Corvettes in the American magazine which I read said that the 6.0 engine is more powerful, more torquey, lighter and smoother than the 5.7', all of which are perfectly true.

Now then, if owners of 5.7 models, or an owner of a Mini Cooper for that matter, has a problem with that, then it is hardly my fault.

Really? Perhaps you would care to re-post what it is that I said that was so bad then?
I am entitled to my view every bit as much as you.

Afternoon. Interesting thread which reminds me where the whinging pom comes from, please no offence intended.

I recon it is nature people want to think they have a great car, 5.7 or 6.0 and be proud of it, of course there will be a little feeling of rivalry between them but there are ways to express this without being hostile.

Personally I know little about the cars and that's why I am here reading from some of you very informed individuals.

I have been in the states for a few weeks and I learnt a couple of things over there which people may or may not know.
The LS2 was designed to celebrate Chevy's 50th anniversary and the American Consumer and Guide for 2005 cars, the Pontiac GTO is rated as the best buy in it's class, I enjoyed reading the footnote in the article which stated: Made in Australia :-)

Well said.

Some people cannot handle the fact that their cars get superceded by later, more developed, better machinery. I have seen it on Ford and other forums many times over the years.

Listen, if there is a 2006/7 Holden with the new 7.0 Corvette motor, far from being resentful that someone has got one, I would be thrilled that the factory was moving forwards and would either aim to get one myself, or simply accept that it was better than my car.
You cannot stop progress and unnecessary aggression on a forum won't halt it, for damn sure.
