Hello all,

So I have wanted one of these (either) for a long time mainly due to the presence and the sound more than anything else.

I am now in a position where I need a 4 seater so can start justifying this to myself.

question is, can you start these cars quietly without pissing off your neighbours. I live on a terraced street in London and often leave at 6am, I am just worried I am going to start getting complaints if I fire up a 6.0l V8 with Wortec exhaust on it every morning

I feel like I heard somewhere you can get a quiet button set up? Is this true and does it work?

Don’t have one myself by understand wortec have a switchable exhaust which by passes the rear muffler via a butterfly vale set up. I’ve only hear one on YouTube here

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3zS8isnvCFY

Having said that, even without they are not that loud at idle, as you will hear above, and only really get noisey when throttled. So, as I do, cruise of in the morning, cruise home and no one is the wiser.

Hi.
If you find one of these cars with the standard exhaust on then they are actually pretty quiet. Once you bolt a typical aftermarket on then they are generally pretty noisy and yes may irritate the neighbours.
Some systems feature a motorised valve (bi-model) which when opened up bypass the exhaust silencers. They work pretty well, but the motorised valves need maintaining or have a habit of seizing up.
Other systems have a manual arrangement which can be switched from under the car, often needs tools to do though, but still you can choose to set loud or quiet.
I had a Wortec manual system on my first Monaro. Set loud was just that, very loud outside. Interesting though, no drone at all in this mode. However, when set to quiet the exhaust was quiet outside but became very drony inside.
This time I've opted for a system from AAS in Newcastle. It is one mode system, loud enough, but not stupid and drone levels are pretty low.
If you (need) a 4 seats regularly then the VXR8 is probably a better bet, The Monaro is a roomy 4 seater, but getting in and out quickly of the rear is a pain. I bought my Monaro as a 2 seater that can be occasionally used as a 4.

Yeah I am leaning towards the VXR8 as I just like the look of the car and the sound. Monaros is a bargain at current prices though. I do see Monaros seem to hang around online for a long time when they are getting sold though. Get the impression the VXR8 may be easier to sell later on but either way I guess its not gonna be easy to get a good price quickly.

This volume thing could really scupper plans tho - it is exactly why I want the car but I just dont want to find I start getting notes on the windscreen!? I do have those sorts of neighbours too!

definitely don't want the normal exhaust on it. I dont think I have ever heard one with the normal exhaust but regardless of that I really think the weirdly small tailpipes look wrong

Anything but stock you will puss some prince off, it’s London after all.

Vxr8 wortec in quiet mode is still loud when staring, isles ok but you need to remember when starting from cold there’s a lot of energy.

Get an rs6 much better and less obnoxious on the noise.

I love the RS6 but the auto box kills it for me

I am looking at RS4s which I also love but they just dont do it for me the way an obnoxious VXR8 does frown

Yes, my AAS system is still rather loud when starting from cold. Remember the revs sits higher for a couple of minutes at cold idle, so you'd have to get in and drive straight off if wanting to be as considerate as possible.

Also comparatively speaking common as muck next to a Monaro/VXR8. I like owning a rare motor.
The Audi RS models really do come with premium repairs bills too, and they really aren't as robust as the industry tries to make us believe. Don't get me wrong though, good cars.

Mine came with a cat back system, no idea of brand. I’d suggest you check some cars out honestly as my wife hasn’t heard me come or go if I ease the throttle.

When I buy cars I always think buy the one you enjoy the most, that’s how you get your monies worth. if resale is important, 4 door is more practical which more potential buyers. Lower priced cars have sold quickly, missed a 2 owner low miles Monaro 6.0l that sold in week for £10k. higher price can sit for a long time.

However, in the long run older cashed up enthusiasts chase 2doors looking for the car they wanted in their 30s, but bought a family car. Plus back home in Aus the Monaro prices have risen quite a bit in the last 2 years due to being the last every Holden 2 door.
As a comparison the original ‘68-71 monaros were being sent to wreckers in the 80s/90s for scrap value as no one would buy them. Now a bare rusty shell will sell for over £15k, and a well kept version for +£60k. By comparison a fully restored 4door v8s sell for less than half the money.

The simple answer is you need a car with a standard exhaust, anything else will be too loud.
You have to take into account you are performing a cold start in a residential street early in the morning,it takes a few minutes to quieten down
With an after market performance exhaust, even one with a quiet mode will simply explode into life and wake up your neighbors, sorry but that's how it is.
I've accidentally left my exhaust valves open, and started my car up at 5.30am when going to work, the thing is my garage is next to the neighbours bedroom......it makes me cringe everytime I think about it....

As already stated..... with a standard exhaust fitted they really are very quiet.

You won’t get any complaints.

When starting a cat back that is not bi-modal, the very first note is a loud bark at the exhaust outlet.
A guy standing talking at the back of my Wortec cat back '05 CV8 jumped clear off the ground when I started up without throttle!

Also, bear in mind that Wortec values are electric and stay shut overnight if you close them.

WP ones are vacuum operated and default to open when you switch the ignition off. They are therefore f-ing loud when you start up before the vacuum builds and pulls the valves shut. Bit of a design flaw in my opinion.

Don't ask me how i know :-(

The OP could buy a car with a standard exhaust and then fit some custom electric cut outs for full Nascar effect.

Standard exhaust on my 6.0 Monaro. Must be one of the few! Hadn’t pissed off my neighbours yet. Yes, I’d like it louder but can’t justify the expense at the moment.

If the small tailpipes offend you, you could have alternative tailpipe trim fitted. I considered it for mine as I think they’re a but weedy looking too.

two things here....

1. is nobody reaaaallly going to pick up on the comment above.... I mean maybe I am the only childish one on here but....

"my wife hasn’t heard me come or go if I ease the throttle."

2. This is actually making me genuinely sad and pissed off again at how bad value living in London is. Sounds like being on a terrace is really going to stop this from being an option now. No way I could bring myself to buy one with the standard exhaust, unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Also are we talking equally about Monaro and R8?

Will a standard exhaust on a monaro be ok?

Interested in peoples experiences as I guess I could get a standard exhaust and then upgrade it when we move
