Ive ordered my Redline oil, pleae could someone explain how to do it?

is just two bolts, one at bottom for draining? and one at top for filling? also do i need it on ramps, or will jacking up with trolley jack be sufficient?

Finally, how much oil does the diff hold?

Cheers caps, only Gavin wasnt 100% sure at Redline, so suggested i double check with the club!

you need about 1.5ltr but don't fill it right up to the hole as you need some room for friction modifier.

a jack with axel stands is fine........

here is the details www.hsvdriversclub.co.uk/parts/diff-oil.pdf

Hi MCD,

>> is just two bolts, one at bottom for draining? and one at top for filling?

Yes

>> do i need it on ramps, or will jacking up with trolley jack be sufficient?

I did mine recently with just the aid of a 500ml Oil Synringe and the car jacked up on axle stands.

>> Finally, how much oil does the diff hold?

The diff requires 1.7 litres, so you'll need to get 2 US Quart bottles (1 US Quart = 0.946 UK Litres) of Redline + LSD Modifier.

no worries...

Phone Redline again, apparently the oil theyve supplied in the past needed this modifier, but the one they supply now, a 75w90 and have used in other monaros needs no modifier..... mint!!!

Thanks chaps, just need to get it in there now!!

75w90? It should be 80w-140 you need (as per the PDF provided by uk_hsv). IMHO the 90 weight is a little too light and may not provide the required diff lock-up or protection to the gears. However, if Redline have proven the 75w-90 to be better than the 80w-140 in the Monaro's then who am I to contradict.

Any Redline users able to comment on this or let MCD know what you used please.

Yes please.. more feedback the better please!

I'm a little concerned over this conflict of views as i dont wanna put the wrong stuff in there!

Ive phoned Gavin back and he assures me hes supplying the right stuff for thr Monaro & i need no modifier? Oil used in the past needed it, but thats why they supply this stuff now??

Had another long chat with Gavin at Redline,

Apparently, the exact specified Diff Oil by the factory for the Monaro is 75w90 as i have ordered. Apparently the thicker oils 'shock proof type' are a racing/competition type oil which by the time you've added enough modifier to stop the clunking are pretty much the same thickness as normal oils.

I was advised by Gavin that yes i can have the 80w140 by all means, but its not whats specified for the Monaros diff by the manufacturer.

All i want to do is silence the constant wine i get at 60-70mph constant speed, apparently my diff oil has broken down and as such the replacement oil should rectify this....

The one thing that confuses me is people talking about locking the diff up on launch and that as standard it doesnt do it?? the diff in my car works beautifully, as two black lines out of a local carpark at weekend will testify? Why should i need a thicker oil and modifier if alls working fine as is?

I dont know.. its all a bit beyond me this!

Confused Mike!?!?

I have used the light shock and the stuff you are using latterly. WHen i used light shock it needed moddifier, when i 'loosened and used the diff properly' (dont ask he he he) i used all the moddifier and still got noise. Changed to the 75w that Gavin has suggested and it runs very well. Locks up nicely, not too aggressive and is very quiet, this was done at about 12000 miles on an 04 VXR.

I have just phoned Gavin to check what he has sent you.........

You have an oil which has the modifier included into the oil, so just drain the oil and add the new up to the fill hole.

He has sent you this oil because you told him the car is for normal road use.............

Us performance minded folk use the light/heavy shockproof oil which needs to have modifier added to get the perfect balance of lock-up in the diff.

This takes some time to do and for someone not after 100% performance from the diff is maybe a little OTT BUT the oil you have will give you a good result just not the perfect result (but you have none of the messing about)

Castrol SAF XA,

Is recommennded for the car if anyone is interested.
No need for modifiers or additives.
Good oil; Used by a lot of the V8 Supercar Teams

The new-ish 10w60 is brilliant in these V8 engines too.

Agreed sid447, the Castrol SAF-XA is loved by most down under and APAC, but unfortunately Castrol don't sell it in Europe (or they didn't last time I spoke to them). They suggested SAF-XA as the closest equivalent, but again getting hold of the stuff proved difficult.

The 10w-60 is great for your warmer climate but the 5w-40/10w-40 is better suited to our European weather & temps.

Original fill is Mobil SHC 80W-140 ID plus 100 ml of sturaco friction modifier.

75W-90 oil is too thin for this diff as it has a 38mm pinion offset.

Holden service fill is I believe Castrol SAF-XA (European spec is SAF-XJ) plus the sturaco both these oils are 75W-140

Only other oil with sign-off is Morris Lubricants LODEXOL XFS (no Sturaco required) This oil was signed off by Dana (BTR) Australia to support their UK customer Morgan, the oil is sold and stocked in 1L packs by lindenspecialvehicles.com

Service parts for the diff are available from bpw.co.uk (Mark or Garry)

I use the Morris Lubricants oil, no probs. to date. Found a few dealers in the Bristol area by looking on the Morris website.
As far as I'm aware, this is the oil that BTR recc. & they had a big input into the development of it.
