MOT question - Lack of engine management light = MOT fail?
Discussion
Interestingly I’ve just had this argument with the same MOT station that’s MOT’d mine for the last 5 years.
Because they can seem the silhouette in the bottom right, they think the bulb has been removed.
Posted on the Facebook groups and there’s nothing “in writ” to produce for next year, other than the threads like this.
A few have suggested walkinshaw for something but it’d need to be from the DVSA.
Or we just keep this thread favourited.
I like the idea of telling them to disconnect the o2 sensor, but they’ll be finicky about “interfering” with the car during the test I think.

Yes, tester can't interfere with the car during the test. This light rule changed in the last 18 months.Because they can seem the silhouette in the bottom right, they think the bulb has been removed.

RE: Clarification on section 8.2.1.2, of the MOT inspection manual
Good afternoon,
Thank you for your enquiry regarding your Vauxhall Monaro and the MiL lamp at MOT.
Having spoken to Vauxhall recently they stated that the MiL lamp is fitted to these vehicles however it may not illuminate when the engine is switched on.
Your picture below displays a MiL that appears to meet the UNECE regulation requirement.
These vehicles do not fit in with "Kit cars, amateur built vehicles and American pickups……” as they are not this type of vehicle.
Regarding the MOT :
At MOT the tester should be aware that these vehicles may not be fitted with a MIL lamp that does not function when the ignition is switched or engine started.
This vehicle should not be failed if the MIL is inoperative, but should only be failed if the engine MIL indicates a malfunction.
Should testers or users of these vehicles require clarification they should email mot@dvsa.gov.uk
We are unable to comment on 3rd party website or forums unless evidence from a manufacturer can be produced.
