Can anyone help please

On the middle panel of the dash broad when the car is turned on it says ------

SERVICE
ENGINE OIL at the side a graphic of an oil can dripping

Vauxhall main dealers who I bought the car from & Vauxhall AA Assistance don't know what it means.

The oil level was very slightly down but now fully up.
the car has done 6100 miles 4000 short of a service.

As I said when the car is switched on this comes on for 10 secs then goes out, also when engine is turned off same again.

The car is a Monaro 6.0 VXR

CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE ??

The 05 cars seem to have an engine oil life calculation in the software for the car. It may be indicating that the oil needs changing based on the driving of the car.

6100 miles is close to 10,000 kilometers so it may be making a judgement based on the service interval being set at K's not miles.

Just a thought.

Your local dealer should plug the car into a Tech2 machine (that they all have) it will say exactly why, and they can also reset it.

Personally, would be changing the oil every 10,000km. Mainly because of the amount of rubbish and soot you pick up here on the motorway. You just have to look at the colour of the oil. If the oil looks dirty, best to get the sucker out.

Agree with Raggyman, change oil/fiter every 6k miles on the HSV as recc. in the service manual. Despite the properties of synthetic oil, I feel this makes sense & is a relatively small cost.

Dear Strife

Thank you for your comments ref Engine Oil Indicator.

It sounds like the same thing, but what was the end result please. Did you find out what caused it

Cheers

hmm, the local dealer in southampton changed the oil and filter and then told me they cannot reset the warning until it has the 10k service.

not happy

No problem
1/ Turn ignition ON
2/ Press throttle to floor 5 times
3/ Turn Ignition OFF
4/ Wait 3 seconds
Oil indicator should now be reset
Cheers

Is it making the warning noises? when the oil can is lit?
They should really connect the TECH2 up to it if it is. And see if there are any DTC being logged. If it is just a "you need a service" then just reset it.
I haven't heard of the above procedure.
There is a set procedure to reset the service light, which I have posted on another thread.
I will try and find it.
Are your speedometers in Kilometres or miles? I am guessing it could be going off at every 6000 miles which is approx 10,000km. <<<ooops I am a bit slow there as caspy has already mentioned that!

The warning you're seeing has nothing to do with the service interval indicator.
Based on a bunch of parameters the ECM predicts when the engine oil is near the end of its life and lets you know you should do an oil change.
If the engine is operating at extreme temperatures at high RPM then the predicted life of the oil is obviously much shorter. If you don't drive under conditions like this just reset it.

As above. The Corvette also has an enfgine oil life monitor which it expresses on a bar that diminishes in blocks. As said above, just change oil and reset when it's due. The idea is to be more environmentally friendly as some people insist on changing their oil every 3000 miles. This is meant to tell you when you need to change it.

Turn the ignition and press throttle to floor 5 times seems like an April fools joke, well check the calendar and its not April so I gave it a go.. tell you what it works for me.

Evidently a few early build cars were sent out with this function enabled when it wasn't meant to be.
Guess you guys ended up with some of them.

Ive never heard this used by Holden.
I would say the real deal is simply as someone else stated the car is coming upto 10k kilometers and the ecu was not recalibarated to take into account the fact that your speedos are now showing in mph.

The real deal is that if you look thru the Holden techlines this is a known problem as I stated and nothing to do with the service interval indicator
