Pretty sure that VB to VY prefixes denote four door Commadores through the years, not sure about Monaros.

Yeah, the models are for the 4 door. They go a little bit like this..
VN, VP, VR, VS, VT, VX, VY, VZ.

The monaro is loosely based around the VX. I think that the rear lights are the same.

As I understand it the first Monaros imported to the UK from May 2004 were the 'VY' variant, the later 2005 facelift versions are 'VZ' I have a 2004 CV8 (VY)

I think the first Monaros sold in Australia, from 2001, were designated 'VX' basically the same bodyshell as our Monaros but with an older dashboard design.

All I could find at short notice

www.holden.com.au/www-holden/jsp/corporateinfo/history/history.jsp?link=historical

There were VB,VC,VH,VK,VL,VN,VP,VR,VS commodores before the current structure was used.

The VT II started with the GENIII engine in 1999......Most of the HSV's running around over there.
The VT series I started in 1997 - A few of them running around too over there with the old Holden engine.
The VX was next in 2000 followed by the VXII, the VXII also saw the launch of the Monaro as the V2.
The VY came along next with the Monaro V2 series II as well.
VY II started in 2003 had V2 series III Monaro - same as your 2004 versions.
VZ is current for sedans and Monaros.
Now utes!!! Before current shape there was the VG,VP,VR,VS.
Started as VU in 2000? or 2001? then VU II came out when the VX II sedan came along.
However by the time VY came along they were the same as the sedans VY and VY II and now VZ utes.
Statesmans/Caprice started back in the 80's?? as the WB
Then stopped for a while, then the VQ,VR,VS before the current structure.
The Statesmans/Caprice...Long wheel base car started in 1999 with the WH.WK in 2003?? then WL last year which came out with the VZ.

I will get shot down in flames if any of it is wrong!

Gday mcd,
Your 2004 CV8 would i think be either a Series III or a VZ.
I could be wrong, but if you have the dual exhausts and tank in boot, then it would be a VZ.
The current Monaros are actually based off the Pontiac GTO, instead of the other way round, hence the fuel tank in the boot etc. I guess it cuts costs to do it that way.
The Commodore models were:
1978 VB, 1980 VC, 1982 VH, 1984 VK, 1986 VL, 1988 VN, 1991 VP, 1993 VR, 1996 VS, 1988 VT, 2000 VX, 2002 VY, 2004 VZ.
The first LWB version was the VQ (of the VN), and called Statesman or Caprice.
Then they followed Commodore with VR and VS, but the LWB VT was called WH, then WK, and currently WL.
The Monaro was based off the VT, and called V2 (version 2 after the first series in the 60's and 70's) CV6 and CV8.
The Holdens before the Opel based Commodore were:
1948 48-215 (FX) 53 FJ, 56 FE, 58 FC, 60 FB, 61 EK, 62 EJ, 63 EH, 65 HD, 67 HR, 68 HK, 69 HT, 71 HG, 72 HQ, 74 HJ, 76 HX, 78 HZ, and the last LWB and ute were the WB ending in 84.
The first Monaro was based on the HK and the last Monaro Coupe was the HX LE.
The VL Commodore used the Nissan RB 30 3.0lt straight 6 instead of the old Holden 6 which didnt like new emission regs and unleaded fuel. Then the VN started with the Buick 3800 V6 until the new HFV6 Alloytech was released in the VZ.
First V8 Holden was the HK with 307 and 327 SBC, then HT with 350, and the new aussie 253 and 308 (later lowered to 304 to get in under the 5000cc touring car regs in 85.
The 304 became injected in the VN and continued till the VT series 1.
The GEN III LS1 came out in the VT series 2 in 1999.
Edit, just noticed after i typed that , that moto had already posted all the info.
