He'll be even more dissappointed when he compares servicing costs.

Awesome cars mind you those M5's - not sure which would be better in the twisties.

Respect, you are to be congratulated, this should be picked up by those in the other parts of pistonheads for debate elsewhere.

We must have a 'friendly' some time WHEN I get my car back....

I seen one run at Santa Pod a couple of weeks back. It did something like a 12.7 @ 119mph.

Thats pretty hot for a totally standard car.

Hilarious! I love how "the odd extras" includes a Harrop Supercharger....
Hey Im not complaining, whatever it takes - speacially if M5 bloke doesnt know it has one - heheh.
Really hate the fact that I really love BMWs though. Conflict of interests for me this thread....

I assume he had pressed his go fast button to the 500+ bhp? Good scalp though, the car intrigues me, may go hunting and try for a play.

I've yet to drive the new M5, got quite excited about it when it first got mentioned that it was going to have a V10, as I love fast 4 dr saloons.
The complex technology leaves me fairly cold though, I honestly don't want the 11 or 12 gearbox settings.
The I-Drive which I experienced in a 535d was also hideous.
The high revs. & low torque are not my cup of tea either, although in practise this might not be such an issue.
On paper, my car should be faster in a straight line, although in reality I would have to do a "perfect" get away, which is not something I practise, whilst the M5 driver can let the "Launch Control" sort it all out.
As for handling, from what I have read I think a modified HSV or Monaro in the right hands might be able to match or beat the M5, but for less experienced drivers the M5 would probably be a fair bit faster.
As for sheer fun, the far simpler HSV or Monaro would win IMO.

"Tiler" has the full product which has LCD controller and Launch control which retails at £850 + vat....

Fitting is £380 + vat inc custom map for Monaro......

As your car is a VX, did you get the full racelogic?
the upgrade cost is a good deal.....

No, the VX came with a basic HSV/Holden traction control.
My previous VT had the Racelogic system that Rod had fitted to all the VT's he imported. The GTS-R had a more complex system than the 3 or 4 settings the GTS had.
So I'd have to start from scratch, which I guess would be costly?

TBH, from what Ive read about power with the Harrop kit, I still say the M5 would still smoke them. I was amazed whan I seen how quick it ran at Santa Pod. It has 500bhp, and puts it to the ground very well.

But I'd still prefer to own a Monaro etc. The amount of technology in an M5 is amazing, but also ridiculous. Imagine what that will be like once the warranty runs out, and things start to go wrong, which inevitably they do. They will be a very very espensive car to maintain.

Don't know about the Harrop S/Charger, mine's a Vortech.
I'd be surprised if my cars mid-range performance wasn't quicker than the M5 though.
From experience, my car from 50-150mph can keep up with most exotica, 360 & 911 Turbo not able to beat it.
I don't really go in for 0-60 heroics, as I'm fairly respectful of the drivetrain etc. but Autocars' time of 4.6 secs was easily achieved
I would imagine that over 150, these cars far superior aerodynamics would destroy the Commodores though.
Yeah, just imagine the potential for electrical glitches on the M5. Tempting as a used M5 will be in £3 years time, you'd have to be brave to own one which wasn't covered by a full warranty!

I think that the M5 would be easier to drive fast but if the monaro w/harrop had a good driver then it would be close. I saw the M5 at Santa Pod as well and thought that he probably could have launched it a lot better, seemed to be bogging down??

My GTS-R only had fitted by HSV UK the basic Racelogic on or off T/C.I upgraded to the 5 setting by sending ecu back to Racelogic for a upgrade and then I done a rewire and re-mapped the ecu for the Commodore VTII .Did not fit launch control as I doubt it would get much use.
