Hello, I bought an '04' Monaro the other week and think it's fantastic. I've done about 500 miles in it and after having a bit of 'fun' now need to buy some new rear tyres! Could anyone recommend tyres for the Monaro? Should I stick with the Bridgestones or is there something better out there?

I put Toyo Proxes T1-R's all round last week. Bumped up the rears to 255/35/18
which seems to have improved grip and providing more traction than the standard Bridgestones I had before. No noticeable difference in ride quality.

Goodyear Eagle F1 GDS3, I have these on my HSV & love them. They have won various tyre tests including the Autocar performance tyre, were the test car was a Monaro. Very good in the wet.

Pirelli Nero Zeros are worth considering or the PZero themselves

Thanks - perhaps I'm being dumb but how do you search the forum to find stuff like this?

The search button is up the top just under the banner ad. Select "forum" from the drop-down list, then you can enter in your search criteria and select which forum(s) you want to search plus some other settings.

Welcome to the forum and to Monaro ownership btw

Hiya Monny.. welcome onboard!!

Booster, with your 255/35/18s on.. is the tyre wall much higher that the 225/40/18s as standard? or do they look OK?

Only ask as ive just fitted 245/40/18s to the rear which are awesome but a little taller on the tyre wall than the fronts.... just wondering if the 255/35 would be any better like what you have done?

A-ha - I was looking at the forum using a different web address so none of the options at the top were visable... using pistonheads.com now and works fine.

Thanks again...

mcd. They look the dogs nads to me. Nice and fat!! If anything the tyre wall is slightly lower - by about .5cm. Have attached some pics for you.

Booster - very nice, but I'm no tyre expert can I just go into the shop and ask for 'mcd' will they know what I'm on about. I also notice from other posts that some drivers have opted for different sizes (fatter , etc) what are your thoughts on that?

225x40x18 Diameter 25.09
255x35x18 Diameter 25.03
Difference 0.16%.
At least thats what my tyre calculator tells me.

Monny, mcd is a forum member. You would get some very strange looks if you asked for some mcd. LMAO

The tyres on the front are 235's standard not 225's. Pomona please recalculate for us.

I don't think the rim width will support much fatter tyres comfortably and may even rub the wheel fender.

Whoops, so OK what do I ask for when I pop into the shop? From your photos I can't make out the name of them...

Just find a tread pattern you like and ask for 255/35/18's for the rear tyres. I've kept 235's on the front. I have Toyo Proxes T1-R's. Great tread life and grip in the wet. I.e. better traction all round. I got mine done at Micheldever Tyres near Winchester. £140 ish each.

Oh yeah. When you get them fitted tell them to place the yellow dot on the tyre opposite to the valve. It helps with balancing as the yellow dot marks the "heavier side of the tyre". I forgot to do this - doh.

We fitted 255/40x18 to mates monaro, just after he bought it. The std 23's are just too thin for the rims.

WIll be chaing the fronts to 245's in the near future.

Didnt go for 255/35x18, as didnt want to reduce the sidewall to nothing.
