Thanks chaps for your posts in the Scottish cruise thread, the following is ALL down to smoking:

I am feeling quite well as I have really been ill for months without knowing it, got rushed to A&E and they thought it was Acute Pancreatititus 2 weeks ago, shame they did not do an ECG then as this was likely my first attack, 2nd attack & my Doctor took one look at me and had me admitted to a Medical Assessment Unit at QA Portsmouth who then had me rushed with a blue light to Southamton from being diagnosed with coronary heart attack, then then cleared the blocked artery with a balloon and then performed a coronary Angioplasty and fitted a Stent. No chest pains now but some discomfort around the groin as this is where they enter to perform their magic, no driving for 4 weeks & off work for 6 weeks, I thought a mixture of poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, nah, just smoking alone, can't tell you guys to stop smoking but I never really thoght just smoking alone could do this, nurse in hospital says they see 30 & 40 year olds in with what happened to me without being over weight!

Biggest nightmare was being on wards with old people with limited chances of full recovery, I am lucky as they expect me to make a full recovery with a chance of a better existance if I do not return to smoking, I owe it to the NHS not to smoke let alone my distraught wife & worried daughters.

Hope you don't mind me highlighting my plight as its not a sympathy post, just a cautionary tale.

Can't wait to get back in the HSV before I go back to work, thankfully it is with a local gargage having a fractured sump repaired and all my leaks sorted & now ready but they will keep it with them a bit longer so I am not tempted to drive it!

Bloody hell, that sounds scary. Glad to hear you're on your way back to health and many more years of HSV hooning! I quit smoking three years ago, even more glad I did now than I was at the time.

All the best to your wife as well, tell her I haven't forgotten about her project.

You're a lucky man Will.....

I'm a CFR medic with my local Ambulance Service - I've lost count of the number of patients who I've been to with the same complaint who won't be driving anything, ever again.

Glad to hear you caught it in time and are on the mend

51 in October Nige

Thanks guys for the kind words, not planning exiting stage left for a couple of decades, actually feeling better now than I did previously so the attack was a wake up call for someone who lost their Mum at 65 & Father at 75 who both smoked.

Will,
As I am an old member and enjoyed our meets,I smoked for 45 years and then had a bout of FLU.Not your chesty cough and all the other symptons that today people say,"I have had FLU when in reality it was just a cold".2 weeks on my back "dieing" as such.Never smoked since (now 7 years) and yes you will survive to an old age, still pushing the GTS to the limits.
Glad you are up and running on all 8.

Hi Will

Your tale brought a few memories back, 2 1/2 years ago i went to work feeling like shit and ended up like you rushed to hospital in the middle of a heart attack. Like you i was taken straight to the threatre and had the blockage removed then they fitted 2 stents. I was 41 at the time but i had given up smoking 5 years before. The consultant who sorted me made it quite clear that the damage to my artery had been caused by my smoking and he said it was just as well i had stopped otherwise the damage would have been more widespread

I am sure you will make a full recovery, i have not had a day off work since my heart attack and the only downside is the amount of tablets i have to take daily but its a small price to pay.

just make sure you keep of the fags

all the best

Hi Moy

Great reply and thanks for giving me hope for the future too. Was discussing this topic as ever with the missus and reckon the real reason why smokers are not as informed as they might be is down to the revenue collected from those who smoke, yes good advertising against smoking but not enough done - period.

Will
