Hi,

I've got a vxr8 with 1500miles on it and I can't remember if it's done this since new but when the clutch is down everything sounds ok but if I release the clutch even with the car in neutral there is a very slight clattering noise. If I then press the clutch down the noise dies away. also kinda notice it when pulling away in gear.

Could be just one of those things but does anybody else have this on their cars?

I have exactly the same on my yr 2000 VT11 GTS. In my case its the rear gearbox bearing. donut wore out and the shudder caused the rear oil seal to go and lack of oil damaged the bearing. I replaced the oil seal and now just have to put up with the noisy bearing. Having said this I doubt its the same problem you have as you have much lower mileage than me. I have done about 20k miles with the noise and it isn't getting any worse so I'll put up with it. Think its around £600 to have the bearing replaced.

My G/box makes exactly the same noise (05 CV8 19k). I thought a change of oil might cure it but, alas, no. But as others have said in the past, it's nothing worth really worrying about. More a characteristic of this type I guess.

Incidentally, the 'box on my old Capri 2.8i used to make a very similar noise and that was still going fine at 140,000miles when I sold it. However, that was the notorious type 'N' so it could have gone bang on the new owner a week after I sold it!

The T56 is a big ole gearbox....you may just have to live with a few noises here and there...( assuming it isnt too bad of course )

You ever wonder why Mercedes etc dont offer their high powered cars with manual gearboxes ??

Its very difficult to build a refined, smooth shifting box, that will handle big power. With the engine running, and foot off, the clutch, the gearbox internals are still rotating, so some noise is only to be expected.

Yes to all points. My VXR8 makes that clattering noise in all gears but sixth loud enough to be unacceptable. Still under investigation by dealer. Re the comment on manual high torque gearboxes, I have driven lots of trucks with silent boxes and in this day and age I would have thought these issues could easily be engineered out during manufacture. One further point, is the gearbox, in order to effect a relatively smooth change utilising lubricant of a too thin viscosity? It is most apparent that when cold the noise levels are just about acceptable.

Maybe worth getting your dealers to check the gearbox fluid level.

Done.Dealer was advised by VX to try a different fluid. No noticeable difference.

Is it a major job to check this? Just trying to work out if it's a "while you wait" or a "leave overnight" type job.

Someone else has suggested that it could be the idle gear bearing.

Hi. Interesting this. While I do not have the same problem you do my VXR8 has been back to the dealer already due leaking gearbox oil which was actually noticed by the nice chap at monkfish. Turns out that there is a very slight leak when selecting reverse gear, (took them 4 hours to work this out!!). Just wondering if this car has problems mechanically in the gearbox area. Probably just a coincidence. Hope the problem gets sorted. Great car otherwise dont you think?

fab.

interesting though - used the car today and it also only makes slight transmission noise when it is hot. first 10-15 minutes were fine so may be a similar problem.

I have to admit this is a little worrying. My gearbox has also been changed as have several others on this forum, the Tremec T56 is supposed to be one of the toughest in the business yet they seem to keep going wrong, why is this?

Whoa - any idea on the turn-around-time on that? It's not a case of ordering parts from Oz is it?

Have any of the boxes that have been removed, been stripped for inspection to see what any problem actually is ?

or does anyone know if these boxes are all lying about, and could be bought very very cheaply biggrin

They didnt say but according to previous comments several have already been changed which hopefully means they are available without undue delay.

Mine was turned around within 48 hours the fault being diagnosed. I guess they must have a ready supply of Monaro parts in Luton!

Well I've got mine booked in.

I'm now stranded without a car as apparently until it's verified there's a warranty problem the dealer do not offer a courtesy car service.

great - 35k on car for less than 2 months and now carless.
