What was the cause?

I just drove 100 miles today, with the windows open and I noticed that gear changes were not quite as smooth as before. The gear knob also gets scalding hot, so thinking they are related.

If I drive with the windows up, the gear knob stays cool. Which indicates an airflow reason for the heat transfer.
