When driving into Ormskirk today I hit a pothole at less than 30mph with sufficient force to switch the wipers on!. Shortly after this my clutch would only disengage with the pedal right at the floor, then eventually I lost the clutch altogether which culminated in an expensive recovery.
Any thoughts? could the pothole be coincidental or the culprit?

Would it be possible to provide more information, such the type of car, it's age and condition and the area of road you suspect might have caused this.

Generally, effect follows cause, so it might be reasonable to suspect the pothole.
It's unreasonable to attempt to speculate without more information.

It sounds like a miserable occurrence though, I hope you are OK and not too distressed by events.

The car is a 2002 3.6 Tamora, recently serviced at RVT with no issues detected and <30,0000m.
The car had been driving fine prior to the pothole which was on the A577 wigan rd in the middle of the road I think, somewhere in the vicinity of the disused pub. (I can't recall exactly where since I didn't need to use the clutch until I hit the town centre where I found it was barely operating) The car is now recovered to RVT where I await my turn in Ians worklist.
I suspect it may be something to do with the actuation mechanism, it still feels like it has a pedal (ie hydraulics feel like they work) but does not disengage) maybe something fell off or broke with the jolt.
Thanks for your concern; it WAS miserable but I'm better than that!

PS- if you're anywhere near Ormskirk- grateful if you can send/post a pic of the offending pothole and i'll give the council some grief.

If anyones mildly interested, the slave cylinder was found to be seized solid and the clutch had lost most of the fingers from the diaphragm. frown
Back on the road again today thanks to Ian@RVT #TOPBANANA

Did he think it was pot hole induced?

He didn't think so. Nor did I; I did hit it with a right whack- I asked the original question in case anyone else had suffered similar issue- I couldn't think of a scenario how it could have induced it (but reserved the right for someone to say- "ah yes sir- they all do that") A large portion of the fingers were found to be broken and those that remained were heavily worn down. Until the failure it felt fine. No noise- its probably <100 miles since its last service and nothing could be detected then. I'm amazed it actually functioned prior to failure. I can't believe I wore them down as I struggled out of the traffic for a couple of miles.
Like I explained to Mrs Brownspeed- the new clutch can only add value to the car. Her response was to go shopping for some "bargains"!

I have seen a Chimaera clutch where the fingers were just about to break - something to do with a faulty thrust bearing IIRC. His clutch was horribly heavy prior to the wear being spotted, and joyously light after it was changed.

I have also seen a picture of a Cerbera or Tuscan clutch with no clutch fingers at all........and it took about 10 people posting before someone said "where have the fingers gone?"

Looking back at it the drag starts probably overheated it as I set a blinding time for such a low powered car which must have been the skill/ brutality of the driver on the day biggrin

I was holding the clutch at the biting point with 5000 revs on the line my last few and fastest attempts.
The good thing is the new clutch is a dream smile
