I've had this problem for a while, starts as soon as revs rise from tickover.

I've changed the belt and recently the alternator as well. It's the same whether it has a little less tension or as tight as I can get it.

In fact the only time it stops is if it's too loose.

I'm therefore thinking that the pulleys are out of line, although they appear to be ok by sight.

Is there a way of checking this or has anyone has any other suggestions?

I had same problem when i replaced my drive belt; its really tight in there to get enough on the alternator to get enough tension on the belt; I managed to get an extending bar to get extra leverage

You need to buy one of these to ensure you have the correct tension



Cheaper to buy direct or available on ebay

I had nothing but great feedback on these

I'd second the turnbuckle solution. Fitted one of these last month, makes adjustment easy.

I used the M8 70mm (110mm - 140mm) with economy ends. I notice there is a spacer in the photo on Oatesy's post. I assume this is to take out the slight offset caused by the rod ends being thicker than the original bar? Personally I didn't find it necessary, but happy to be proved wrong.

I am currently replacing the bar with a turnbuckle and am also scratching my head over the use of a spacer. It doesn't seem necessary, especially with the eye ends, so the spacer is heading towards my "that might be useful one day" box.

I am planning on replacing my alternator drive belt, and considering adding the tensioner. I have not looked under the airbox and how the alternator is mounted for a while, and assume the positioning of the tensioner is going to be obvious, but if somebody that has one fitted could post a picture of it in situ, I would really appreciate that.

sorry no pics but it is obvious and easy job once airbox is out the way!

Make sure the pulleys are clean and don't have any rubber build-up on them from old belts - I've used a small pick tool to remove rubber from the pulley before reinstalling a new belt.

Oh and be careful of the oil take off and water temp sensor on the block under the alternator. Very easy to drop or push the alternator down 'too' much getting the belt on and off damaging these items.
