The speedo (both needle and digital) have stopped working. Though they intermittently start up. What is this likely to be caused by?

Both not working suggests the speed transducer / sensor attached to the transmission.

Or it could be as simple as the dash ribbon being duff.

They're cheap enough to replace.

Both not working is more likely the speedo transreducer. I recommend the original one which is plug and play to mount. The upgrade needs another bracket. However fiddling the cable through the hose is a mess.

If the cable from ECU to dash is the problem than you would also not see anything on the display.

Great info. Thanks. The transducer is attached to the diff?

Yes, passenger side at the rear of diff.
