No car! Walked to school. Even friends whose parents did have cars, didn't get driven to school!

A Maxi, first a green 1500, then a yellow 1750, but occasionally my Dad would take us. He had a Triumph 2500 PI, then an Audi 100 Coupe, followed by an Audi 100 GLS, then an XJ6 4.2 and for my last few years at school, a 735i - the best car he ever had by a country mile.

Gosh, that's a rare car, can't have been many 1600 Spitfires about.nerd Anyway, what's so crap about a fun two seater sports car?

I used to walk or cycle to school (mostly on my own) when I was in shorts at primary school, then bus or cycle to secondary.

I mainly walked to primary school (less than a mile), and cycled to secondary (about four miles away).

There were one or two rare moments of embarrassment when my mum picked me up in her mint green Austin Metro Mayfair hehe However, the embarrassment was really from being collected by car at all by parents. It just wasn't cool! How attitudes change! wobble

I had a maths tutor when I was secondary school and he would pick me up right outside the school gates in his poo brown Lada Riva which was always very embarrassing.

Our next door neighbours son was a few years older than me and when he passed his test he used to drive me in to school in the morning in his Vauxhall Viva, which was knackered and the passenger door used to open when he went around corners.

I walked to school aged 5. Then when I went to senior school at 11, I went by train (walked to station). When I got to 16, I'd saved enough for a moped (Yamaha FS1-E) and then chopped that for an RD250. When my parents did drive me (if the trains were bust) then it was a Datsun 120y coupe (the shame).

Slightly o/t but i remember when my dads austin 1800 land crab could fight off the ferris beetle no more (wings held in situe with gaffer tape painted burgundy to seamlessly blend in) and having walked home from school for lunch saw a russet brown princess 2.2 auto parked on the pub car park where we lived. My old man had it for a test drive from some old dear in the village and wanted my opinion whether we should buy it. Twas then i noticed the reg number... JET 9.
BUY IT!!!! i urged knowing in 18 months (come 17) that would look great on my 1600 sport Mk2 that i was lovingly rebuilding.
Off i ran back to school full of excitement.
The deal was done and the following week the car was dropped off.... complete with age related 'T' plate.
Dad didnt want to part with the £300 notes extra to keep the plate.
Jesus my Dad knew sod all about cars.

Choices

A pea green Fiat 128 estate, shortly followed by a red Fiat Strada or a Mini clubman traveller.
Unless we'd got my grans original B reg (1964 IIRC) mini. That really did smell quite unique, although I hasten to add that was nothing to do with my gran and more to do with some of the plastics and general petrol "aura". By the time it went to the scrapper, I don't think there was much left of the original.

I walked to primary school but at that time Dad was suffering with a white Lada 1200 estate with horrible black vinyl seats; definitely his motoring nadir. The 'Silver Fox' Mk5 Cortina 1.6 L(!) that replaced it was a sharp handling dragster by comparison. In hindsight I realise why he bought a bike(Honda 400/4) to go to work on rather than have to drive it.

As I recall, the seatbelts were those non retractable ones that flopped all over the place. I just used to hang on!

He probably didn't like me, after all, it is no fun having to taxi a 12 year old around when you've just passed your test and want to impress your mates/birds.

hehe

Walked or took the bus for the most part. Although during the latter part of high school my Mum would give us a lift IF we were ready on time for when she left to work. In which case, it was one of these monstrosities:

[quote=Good Soil (Pete)]In the interest of getting things lightened up......What was the most embarrassing thing you were taken to school in? (having spotted someone earlier mention a Skoda!)

We had a Morris Marina....white (well I say white...the bits that were not rusty were white!)

I went out with a girl called Marina Morris - honest!

Not so much of a crap car but I had to squeeze into the gap behind the seats that the roof folded into, it wasn't fun.

I used to know an Anthea Morris but she was really called Marina.

I also used to know a beautiful blonde (female) bombshell called Alice Cooper.
