Hi,

Purchased a new N420 roadster nearly a year ago, and (along with other problems that have been sorted out), have this irritating problem of a squeak from the roof mechanism just above the driver's ear.

It sounds like a child's squeaky going over bumps, and of course it is intermittent, and there appears to be no pattern to it.

I have returned the car to the dealers three times already, but to no avail; they can't rectify the problem.

Anybody out there got any ideas, or have suffered a similar problem?

Contact AM directly or try another Dealer.

AM should be able to help.

If you need any numbers let me know.

I had the same problem with roadsters that I have owned.

Both were the catch that grabs the front part of the windscreen header rail when the roof is closing. When locked and going over a bump it rattled with the inside top of the roof. Solution was to glue a small piece of felt (the ones that you can buy for putting under vases etc to stop scratches are ideal) into the roof where the catch was hitting and this sorted it.

Second one was the locking catch having a small amount of sideways play when locked, this was causing a squeak when going over a bump, all I done with this was to take a large elastic band and tied around the catch to stop it moving sideways.

Best to open the roof part way and you will be able to push the catch in and out to see if it is hitting the inside of the roof or if there is play within the catch, compare it to the other side.

Honda S2000's suffer the same issue
Both my roadsters have been fine (but then I rarely drive with the roof up! wink )
Small amount of lithium grease on the metal joints and very small amount if silicon grease on the rubber seals usually sorts it out.

Wife's Z4 is the same, squeaks and rattles especially over our road surfaces and the ubiquitous speed humps. I have ended up just accepting it as part of a Roadster experience !

Thank you for the responses so far.

In my opinion, roadsters in this day and age shouldn't really have rattles and squeaks; especially a £100K one.

I've owned mainly convertibles in the past (SLK, M3, 911 (997)), and have never had this problem.

I am aware of the 'Aston Martin experience'; with minor rattles etc, but this squeak is actually embarrassing - squeaking like a baby's squeaky toy over bumps - passengers actually enquire what the funny noise is when in the car!

I have noticed a pattern to the noise, and that it occurs after about half an hour's driving, i.e. when the car is really warm.

Futher suggestions would be welcomed

Mine also has this noise problem, sounds like it is coming from just behind the drivers seat.

Does get worse once warmed up and going over bumps. Can just about hear it from outside of the car with the engine ticking over in neutral. (From around the rear wheels area) It can be heard outside while going along.

Would like to think that it is just something loose on the exhaust, but got a bad feeling it has something to do with the Sportshift clutcheek

I understand that the clutch will make that noise when it's due for replacement.

Methinks a conversation with Rick will be happening soonfrown
