I just thought I’d pass on my initial impression on the new Garmin GPS / Nav system that’s fitted to my V8 Vantage S.

My understanding is that they are now fitted to all 2012 MY Astons. I did ask about retro fit and the answer I got was that the hardware and software are all new so the answer is no.

Back to the impressions, it's really good! If you know and like the usual Garmin portable units then you’ll get to grips with it immediately. IMHO it does all that a GPS / NAV should do.

The only small things I think that could be improved (software hopefully) is that the voice prompts are a bit too loud even on minimum volume, though it’s really not too bad, tweak that would be nice. As well you have to go into the set up menus to turn the voice prompts off or on which is a bit of pfaff.

It has a GPS speedo, indicates what the current speed limit should be (in normal circumstances), all the usual search and POI functions.

The only other thing that so far I’ve not 100% figured out is the updates. At the moment it looks like there are only yearly updates for maps and data which is a bit of shame as for the portable units are updated quite regularly for the maps and very often (~weekly) for the data.

It would also be nice to at least be able to load your “favourite” waypoints, though so far I’ve not come across a car you can do that. Again, a nice to have.

As for a comparison to the previous Volvo system I can’t say as I’ve never used one, though I’ve not ever heard anything good about it. It was part of the reason to buy a 2012.

I’d like to hear what others have found.

I'd concur with that
Couple of other things I noticed
It lifts a lot quicker but goes down slowly
I had to switch the voice notifications off as they kept interupting the stereo frown
