Given that it is chucking it down as I type, where does the water go that enters through the bonnet vents on a V8V? With a lot of rain will parts of the engine suffer (rust etc?)

Yes!
Aston's well known for rusting engines.
Suggest you leave car at home and walk to the nearest pub.
I will be there at 12:30!

So if rain getting into the engine is a problem, why do they put the umbrella in the boot?

Intersetingly this touches on a topic recently where a US PH was telling us how the sun damages the paint and a number of UK PH's seemed to see no downside to keeping their P&J on the drive compared to a garage, given we have little sun in UK. But as pointed out here as rain effectively floods onto the engine and settles if car is parked outside you have to think a garage is going to be a better home. Put two 5 year Aston's side by side; one sleeps in a garage and one in the sun and the rain and you gotta believe the one in the garage is going to be in better nick.

I've been following that discussion on 6speed, and for those that have a choice, garage will lways be better, but I'd expect the rain to drop into the engine and go straight out of the bottom.

Motorcycles don't have a problem getting their engines wet, so its not necessarily a problem

I knew I shouldn't have asked smile I don't have garage space so the p&j will have to brave the weather. Definitely getting an outdoor cover for the winter though.

Does anyone have a recommendation for the best outdoor covers available?

The engine is made of an alloy isn't it? Anyone know what that alloy is? I guess some sort of aluminium? Might not rust then as such, but will still oxidise.

The exhaust system is stainless too so no risk of that rusting. I have noticed some components (looks like a pully of some sort) on the front of the engine looking quite rusty, I presume that is normal? I will take a picture at some point.

Just had a look. Water hits a plastic cover and then drips out the bottom of the engine bay smile

I have thought about this debate over the years. I have garaged cars since the seventies and they all suffered rot. Probably because they were mostly made in the UK. However since putting a dehumidifier in the garage the change has been quiet noticeable. No mildew, no rusty tools and best of all no rusty car. If I put it away wet, everything is dry in the morning. The controlled environment makes a big difference!

George H is the resident 'expert' on outdoor covers
can confirm there was no rain in the pub in the City.
Was going to type the pub was dry, but that would be very wrong! laugh

I used to put a cover on a Vauxhaull Senator 24v that I had in the nineties.I used to leave it parked in Middlesbrough docks. I stopped using it in the end due to the paintwork damage caused by the cover.
The Aston however does have a cover on it while it is in the garage. A very different and very expensive cover, but the wind doesnt get to it there. It does mean that I dont have to polish it when I get home, just cover off and I hit the road in my mean gleaming machine!

That picture has just made me feel very old.
My first thought was - get off the bonnet you'll dent it!
Followed by - mind those heels on the paintwork.
Only after that did I consider anything else
frown

next step it will be a wanting a DB9 and smelling of wee.

A few years back I had a car sprayed and when talking to the coachworks owner about covers he warned me well away from them saying they always do more damage than good to paintwork, even the fitted ones - indoor and out.
