So how best to describe this. Car not fully warmed up (done a mile or so from cold), in second gear, take up to 3000 rpm and then let coast to slow down. I hear a highish pitched whine which lasts a few seconds and then goes.

Only seems to happen in second gear and when the engine is not fully up to temperature. When warm it doesn't happen.

Anyone else heard this or know what it is?

I get that when I accelerate hard with my girlfriend in the car. Or brake hard. Or corner quickly. Doesn't seem to happen when I'm on my own

I think I have an identical problem, I get it in 3rd as well and the same as you described.
Taking mine in for a service this Saturday to Bridge Mill Motors, going to ask the chaps what they think.
Will let you know.

Please do. Maybe it's just because the gearbox is cold but I don't remember hearing the noise before today.

Me too but that is a much higher pitched and more constant whine smile

If it is the whine I think you are describing, I was told it is the oil pump. You have a dry sump engine and when cold it is a bit noisy. If it quietens down when warm it could be that. When I got the V8V, I made the same comment biggrin

Definitely quietens down when warm so that may well be it. Just wondering why I haven't heard it before.

could be a different whine then, but it is a possibility if the whine is from the engine bay?

Just went for a blast (any excuse!) after leaving the car for an hour and no noise at all. Oil pump noise sounds like a good explanation.

I had a whine which was down to worn pulleys / belt in the engine bay - particularly when cold, replacement kit was only £100 + 1 hrs labour I think when my car went into Trinity recently.

Make that + 2 my My2010 started to make the exact same noise but in all gears a few months after ownership. It was actually driven by an AM technician visiting my dealer and he told me it was the oil pump and actually normal, even though it didn't make the noise when brand new.

Sleep easy tonight smile

Think this sounds like something that we had ages ago.
IIRC it was corrected with a new oil pressure relief valve and I think was pretty common, a bit like the dodgy thermostats
I'd whiz it to a dealer and let them comment.

Indeed, when I first heard the noise I did some research and it turns out that the 'whining' is a common complaint and many have replaced the oil pressure relief valve to solve it. In my case I can only hear it when I listen carefully with windows/roof down etc so to be honest I just put it down to normal operation as others have suggested. If it's really noisy then the replacement valve is probably your answer.

Thanks everyone. I'll drop into Grange next time I'm passing and see what they think. If it is a valve hopefully they'll fix it under warranty.

To be honest it isn't that loud and only happens when cold. I raised the subject as I hadn't heard it before.

Ah not sure how long you have had the V8 but sounds like a case of Aston Neurosis settling in. I had a bad case of it for 2 years but have been in remission for around 4 weeks now. Not sure ifs curable or not other than by frequent visits to this forum for reassurance by learning that " they all do that" wink

Only had it for four weeks so you may be right smile

The pleasure of driving certainly outweighs the whining. Sounds a bit like my pull to the left. I was told "they all do that sir" smile

I'm sure BR can fit an ejector seat
