Interesting - yes both mine were/are roadsters
I've done ~1500 miles on the same roads in both mainly around N Wales & Peaks.
Only "chassis" difference roadster to coupe IIRC is the anti roll bars and boot spoiler.
Yes the S could be more compliant for cruising but for what I use it for it communicates alot more then my SP car did.
I found my 4.7 SP slow on the steering the S now has less turns lock to lock, which I like as it turns in quicker and flicks on the steering alot better. ( I came from a highly modified Honda S2000 that was like a gokart with a rocket on it wink )
The S doesn't bat an eyelid at torrential rain, the SP car was always "nervous" in the wet, in the dry it was good but never felt as assured as my S does.
The differences between ASM1 & ASM2 aren't marked enough to make much of a difference at speed IMHO, it is around town and reversing ASM2 is better.

I know the N420 has all the 4.7 SP & N400 parts (it is essentially a loaded 4.7 that is allegedly limited in numbers wink )
That point was for Zanderman who commented S's & 4.7SP's were out of budget.
The N400 would be a could compromise for him.

Doesn't look like you need to spend any more - what a car for the money!

To be honest the last one sings out to me a little more, 10k less miles for a grand more, seems a no brainer - plus McGurk has a great reputation as a seller. The only thing I worry about is 'last serviced 2k miles ago'. That's all very well, but how many months ago was that? Car needs doing every 12 months regardless or mileage. Simple question to ask and hopefully just done - if not, he also services cars now and Bamford Rose are just round the corner smile

All have the same spec pretty much and as with almost all Vantages they are grey with blaaaac... sorry, dozed off there!

They look nice, make some calls and get some drives. Check for stone chips and general condition and also very diligently around door handles and side strakes for the apparently soon-to-destroy-the-marque bubbling paintwork. Check if there is a lip on the discs where they're worn, check tyres, and try and slip the clutch... 6th gear, low speed, foot down. If you're of a mind, get a specialist to check them over for you, always recommended as could save you money. I never have done /shrug.

Nothing jumps out on any of them.
Down to driving them and seeing how they feel and look in person.

So a quick update, I very nearly pulled the trigger on a Jag XFR (and still might) but there have been a few complications that have made me put a hold on things for the time being. I am being a real girl with this decision and seem to be all over the place!!

That gave me the chance to go and have a look at a V8V which was just superb, I can echo all the sentiments that people have posted on here. Really felt like a proper sports car and really had that sense of occasion etc.

So I am now in a real dilemma, its more expensive than the Jag, less practical than the Jag, costs more to run than the Jag but it is an Aston!!!!

Lots to ponder this evening I think!!

You can't put a price on the feeling of getting in an Aston and pushing the start button nor on the sense of occasion that each trip provides. You just keep smiling inwardly and sometimes outwardly.

Go for the Aston smile

can I ask views on the need for a warranty?

With the car I looked at the dealer has offered to put it through a Aston check and sort anything that needs doing but if I want a warranty I will have to pay. £1500 seems like a lot on top of the money I would be spending on the car.

Thanks!

There's a lot of truth in that. When I get into mine, I push the start button, place both hands on the wheel and look out onto the road ahead from behind the wheel of an Aston Martin. Once i get going I'm confident, I'm cool, I know I look great, I cruise with quiet purpose knowing that at the push of my right foot I can put out a snarl so fearsome that it would send Cerberus whimpering. Sat in a Jag you'll spend the while time wishing you were in the Aston.

My personal view is that after my premium warranty expires next April I won't bother wih a warranty. My 2007 car will be old enough that most things could be argued as fair wear and tear anyway and I'd rather put the money into an interest bearing account (probably make a couple of quid in a year!) and use it if and when something goes wrong. £1,500 goes a long way towards a new clutch or brake pads and tyres.

I bought my 2004 DB9 from a main dealer and it came with a warranty, and 'under warranty', the main dealer has seen my car back a few times trying to sort out some niggles. It was handy that they were only circa an hour away and the goodwill / warranty has served me well. Nothing major, just a few interior trim noises and a handling problem sorted out by a change of tyre. My opinion would be to buy from a main dealer with a warranty. In that first year you'll get to 'know' the car. You can make a decision on renewal after the first year.

I have never owned a car that has made me feel the way an Aston does. I went for a DB9 over a V8V for asthetic reasons...to me it looks better,...proportioned more correctly and is astonishingly pretty.... but is a completely different drive.

Good luck!

I went though a similar thing last year. I was looking at 996 Turbos, DB9s, V8Vs and XKRs.

Bottom line was that the XKR went off the list first, because no matter how much I read that it was a better drive than the Astons, it was and would always be a Jag. And it's just a bit not that pretty. I also spied one with the hood down and a short looking tubby bloke driving it (not a great advert) and the rear seat legroom was, well, zero.

As between the Astons, I think it came down to wanting the V8V's looks with four seats. The DB9 looks lovely, right up to the point it parks next to a V8V. Then the rear end and the rear overhang just doesn't look quite like it gels. I was also a bit put off that for my money I'd be buying right into the bottom of the used market for either.

The Turbo is iconic; was/is undervalued used; is largely bullet proof; relatively cheap to run; and has 4WD, making it the only one that isn't intimidated by the wet.

Basically, it started as a a "heart" decision when drawing up the list, and became a "head"* decision when it came to buying.

  • well, sort of. What male kid hasn't lusted after a 911 turbo at some point?

Yes...all used Astons should be sold with either the remainder of the original warranty or a full used warranty on them. I've never come across one that hasn't, and I'm sure that on the pre-owned site they all experience the 140 point check and and a warranty before they are sold.

I reckon the dealer is taking the piss and you should tell him so. The warranty is already included in the price.

Whether you renew this warranty after a year is a whole different scenario, and we will give you options nearer the time smile

What about this car. Less miles, 12 months warranty. Ignore the advertised price, just bid them in the bks

Go on the pre-owned site.

Dealers don't sell cars without the 140 point check AND a warranty. It's included in the price.

Of course, if you want to pay them an extra £1500 then so be it.

This is the one I am looking at:

http://www.vincentknightcars.co.uk/used-cars/aston...

I would have to negotiate the crap out of that one to get near in price!
