Looking for some initial guidance before I get too carried away.

Just out of Porsche ownership (996 facelift C2) and looking for replacement, poss 997 tt but also looking across at AM – Vantage (4.3 or 4.7) or DB9. I have previously spent on Porsche warranties (£1k) and then various OPC servicing minor (£6-700) and major (closer to £1K) and also have LR Disco which is main dealer maintained. Am I going to be horrified at AM costs………?

TIA.

AaS.

Servicing is 10k miles or annual, whichever is soonest whereas a modern 911 (997 on?) is every 2 years, quite a change. Though you're used to annual anyway?

However, Aston specialists really aren't too bad, minor service is around £600, major one is a grand or so. Add 40% for main dealer? Warranty... Opinion is divided on the subject. I let mine lapse and am glad I did, got no use from it. Others have enjoyed the benefits though! £1500 plus service and inspection at AM, not a cheap business and the clutch, tyres and discs are obviously not covered wink

Big costs are clutch, discs and tyres but that's the same for a 911 so you'll be familiar with it. Doubt a Vantage would cost much more than a 996 to run if you've been using OPC and switch to an indy.

For the DB9, they say divide Vantage costs by 8, then times by 12 for the extra cylinders, same as Ferrari wink However, most DB9s are auto so clutch isn't a concern. A manual DB9 has a much stronger twin-plate clutch than a Vantage anyway.

If you're genuinely interested, buy Grants's book, link at the top of the forum page smile

Yeti, thank you.

Looks about what I expected, so I will buy the book and see where that takes me.

It's the mention of Ferrari that always scares me, I very nearly said something about Ferrari in my OP as everyone I talked to about Porsche costs always said that they were 'nowhere near Ferrari/Aston costs...'.

Not even close!! I only mentioned Ferrari as they also have 8 and 12 cylinder engined models!

Times have moved on from the Newport Pagnell days or the DB7 / Vanquish services every 6 months.

Vantage running costs are usually considered alongside Porsche, Jaguar, BMW M cars or Merc AMGs. DB9s are slightly more as there's slightly more to them wink My last service on my DB9 was about £600 including the annual 140 point check at 3 1/2hrs labour.

What !!! When did this happen ??

Seriously though, the sheet is a good template to work from. Not all servicing agents will adhere to it though as I just discovered. JCT seem to change the Air Filter - the most expensive filter - in conjunction with the changing of the Pollen Filter only smile

Seriously guys? It seems maintaining an AM in UK is quite reasonable, not to say cheap.

I also had a Porsche before. Bute here in Switzerland it’s twice as expensive maintaining and V8 Vantage then a 911. I always pay 2.000 to 2.500 CHF (1.300 to 1.600 GBP) for the yearly service, compared to 500 to max 1.000 CHF for the 911.

And if you have to do some repairs, it’s getting really expensive.

A couple of months ago I had my car at the dealer to get the following fixed:

- replace all 4 brake pads and disks
- fix some small issues (fasten the passage air back cover, as it was rattling; replace the head lamp washer)
- replace a sensor (hall sensor) as the transmission was leaking oil

My dealer confirmed its nothing serious, all kind of standard replacements. And then he presented me the cost estimate in the amount of 12.300 CHF (!) that’s 8.000 GBP. Just for some standard work. For this amount I almost get a new engine for the 911. biggrin

8/8th blue blue here and no sign of snow, but I assume you meant some one else!

Thanks for all the advice, looks fairly reasonable to me and at least there's no M96 engine IMS issue (see Porsche threads which abound with scares of 996 engine destruction and subsequent £8K bill) to be wary off (is there?).

Surrey based Indies to investigate anyone?

Apologies my nautical friend, I should have emphasised my recipient as that git on his seemingly 5 year carribean holiday !!!!

PS - Top Tip - Don't go to Switzerland for your servicing or repair work smile

Agreed. But skiing is nice here. But seriously, I do my repair work in Zgermany now, it's much cheaper.

Pretty much the same PPI Nick !

Might book in for a Gastroscopy to check up on things - only a 2 week wait on the NHS tbh - as I don't really want to be using them all the time wink

As a 996 owner as well, I assure you there aren't such design issues with the DB9 or Vantage engine. My 996 RMS and IMS were replaced with the clutch at 50k miles and I'm pretty confident in the car - C4 Manual cabrio, a lot of fun but different league to the Aston smile

For your Surrey based Indy... There's Trinity Engineering in Cobham or Nicholas Mee if you want to go into town - SW London. For main dealer, there's HWM in Walton on Thames.
