Hi All,
I have a problem with my car that I can't seem to get resolved and need some advice. I've had a squeaking noise coming from under the car for the last 4 months (I've only had the car since xmas). It's been back to Grange, and also been into Works Service as well. The noise is intermittent so diagnosis has been difficult. However, WS finally advised that they thought it was the auxiliary belt and pulleys, so I've had those replaced (annoyingly these don't appear to be covered by the AM warranty).

Anyhow, here's my problem. I went to pick up the car from WS this morning after 4 weeks only to get an airbag warning. As luck would have it (but rather upsetting) the car made the squeaky noise again as the mechanic was there. He told me that the noise is the DB9's drive plate? and that early cars do this?

So, can anyone advise please on (a) What is the drive plate, (b) should my car be making this noise as I certainly wouldn't expect it to, and (c) should it be repairable under warranty as I wouldn't have thought this was a service part like a belt?

Many thanks in advance.
Ian

Not sure if this thread is discussing your problem Ian. Have a look anyway. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Edited to add a picture of the drive plate.

If the engineer thinks it is the drive plate then why were you told that the auxiliary belt and pulleys needed to be replaced.. I assume you will get a refund if it does turn out to be the drive plate?

Unlikely. The previous thread would seem to suggest that it's a standard thing to replace the aux belt and associated pulleys first when diagnosing any squealing from the front.

Thanks for the image Gibberish. I'm guessing the torque converter drive plate is similar to a clutch plate? In my mind the car shouldn't be making this noise. It didn't on the 45 minute test drive, and it didn't for the first 2 months. Any information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. I need to be armed with as much information as I can if I'm going to argue my case for this to be fixed under warranty.

Safe to say your car is on the basic Aston Martin branded ‘Extended Warranty Plus’. If you haven’t been through the small print already, it might be an idea to, before making your next move.

The basic cover does have exclusions: If possible foster an alliance with your dealer, to put your case to the warranty company.
Worth remembering you may have to rely on some element of dealer goodwill.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Update for you.

Even though the AM Works engineer that was sat next to the car on Saturday morning told me the noise was the drive plate, the service manager I'm dealing with says it isn't and the noise he heard through a stethascope is coming from the 'oil pickup' in the engine. Trust me, you don't need a stethascope to hear the squeal.

Either way, my Aston Martin Used Approved warranty will not endlessly cover the diagnosis. If it is the oil pickup, I have to pay to have the engine dropped and split and if they find a problem they may cover it!!!! I'm starting to get that uneasy feeling that they know what the problem is, and that when the warranty ends they're going to turn around and tell me the engine needs splitting and I'm going to be faced with a £3k+ bill.

Does anyone know who the best person to complain to is? I've put up with this lack of assistance now for 4+ months. I bought the car to drive it and I'm starting to get scared that there's something wrong. I also don't want to drive the car until something serious fails. I thought taking it to Works Service would finally get it resolved but instead I'm £500 out of pocket for work that didn't need doing, and no better off. This is not the ownership experience I wanted... Or expected.

Any assistance given is greatly appreciated.

Oh yes... I have 'respectfully' suggested to the service manager that it might be worth talking to the mechanic that came out to see me on Saturday morning for the airbag fault.

I can forgive the car all it's faults, even when they occur on a regular basis, but what I can't stand is not being called back and talked to like I'm imagining a noise when one of their own mechanics has heard it.
