Interesting.
I have a similar "discriminatory" issue with insurance as Jockman.
If I request an insurance quote as a martial arts instructor or fence erector (of which I do both), the premiums are generally very low, yet if I was honest (really honest) and noted that my main career was as an actor and managing director of a construction business, I get seriously hammered on the premiums. Sometimes three or four times as much!

And this has been the case for almost every insurance company I've been to!
Original quote for my V8V from Sky Insurance with Actor as career £1700!!!!
Secondary quote through Locktons as martial arts instructor £650!

Never heard of point blank refusal though. Regardless of "group".
Coming from a business director, if we didn't want a particular job (ie an insurance company didn't want to insure someone) we wouldn't just say no! We'd price it so ridiculously high that you'd either find someone cheaper to do it, or not go for it at all!

You'd be amazed at the stats they keep and the risk profiles they erect from them Steve. I suppose it's always best to be as accurate as possible otherwise you leave an option for them to refuse cover smile

Methinks people are getting their wires crossed a bit here - there is a law to stop companies discriminating against certain groups based on gender, religion, ethnicity etc.

There is no such law to protect pilots - why should there be ?? When I'm quoted for insurance I get one premium for being a Director, another if I were a Managing Director.

I have no idea why this is difficult to understand smile
Because as you said, you get 'one premium for this, one for that' - he gets no premium, not for being a pilot but for being in HM armed forces.

Say you were recruiting at your firm... Would you be able to specify 'applications not accepted from ex-military personnel' on the advert? No, the same as you wouldnt be able to say 'no Asians'.

I have no idea why this is difficult to understand smile

The simple fact is service personnel and their perception of acceptable risk is different from a civilian. Hence the higher statistical likelihood of being involved in an accident.

And that fact is enough to earn my respect and gratitude.

Out of interest how are your quotes when you note your profession as "Curmudgeon"? biggrin

OJ is apparently an easy baby. Very chilled, just like his parents smile Coming into teething phase now - worst part of this so far are more regular nappies to deal with, which I find strange.

The simple answer to you on this one Yeti is 'yes' I would on the Armed Forces point - but why would i anyway - and 'no' I wouldn't when it comes to genuinely disadvantaged groups.

Please remember that you have a choice to join HM Forces

You do not have a choice to be a disabled person, a female, a member of an ethnic minority etc

This is why I'm having trouble in understanding exactly where you are coming from smile

Very kind, a genuine thank you. Support for any profession feels good, and we are no exception. I'm beginning to get a much better picture of risk profiles et al, so my initial rant was without the facts I guess. Still, only a week to go until I pick the car up, so frankly that's all I can think about!

It'll have been 2 weeks by the time I get it from when I first drove it! Current owner had to change private plate, plus we're some considerable distance apart. Worth the wait though, I'm sure.

Chaps, breaking news! I sent an email to Locktons who were kind enough to call me about the note on the Ts&Cs. They had not noted it (underwritten by Chubb) and are more than happy to insure me, and are the cheapest by far at £640. Result all round, but thanks for the input anyway.biggrin

On a seperate note, I have a friend who works at Gaydon, he's popping round in the new Vanquish on Saturday....oh dear weeping

Just a quick one.. I was renewing my car insurance for the everyday vehicles today on a multicar policy with admiral. Whilst on to them the lady asked if there were more vehicles I wanted to add .. Just out of curiosity I asked them to quote me on the V8V and I was amazed. Their initial quote, without me negotiating was just over £500! At them moment I pay over £900 for almost the same cover from locktons!
The differences were...
  • No track day cover
  • Not guaranteed AM dealer repairs although they would consider reports and quotes from them in event of a claim.
  • Not an agreed value, they would pay market value only.
If the above doesn't matter to you, you might want to consider them? I am tempted to cancel Locktons and switch over. I only renewed with Locktons 5 weeks ago!
In addition, by having theVv8V on the policy it also reduced my other vehicles and would have saved me another £200 on those..all in all a £600 saving! Not to be sniffed at.
