The topic connection to this forum, is that you would never see an Aston Martin driver doing this.

On occasions when a motorway is fairly clear (usually only at night these days), we are all familiar with the centre lane hogger.

Some years ago, the M40 was widened from three to four lanes (J3 High Wycombe eastwards).

The previous lane 2 hoggers, now drive in lane 3, even though there might not be any traffic in lanes 1 or 2.

Is the behavioral psychology, that there is a compulsion to drive in any lane, which leaves just one spare lane on their offside?

Don't know the answer but the same happens all round the four lane sections of the M25. So annoying.

I'm not complaining about them. I work on the principle that plod will have his camera on them rather than me toeing it on the inside lane unnoticed!

I was on the inside lane Steve, unfortunately I was the only one on that section of motorway.
You think it may be a flawed plan?

Ah Tony, the very man. I just need you to keep doing your usual trick of blasting past as plod takes aim!
Following Phil I felt very exposed. Alway's in the outside lane!

Could this mean caught speeding?

If so, was it a worthwhile velocity?

One of the most frustrating driving experiences in my opinion and how often do the police actually do something about it?

Personally I think rather than try and enforce it and face the impossible task of re-educating drivers, the best thing they could do is remove the principal altogether and allow people to overtake on all lanes rather than just to the right. That would also assist in traffic flow and reduce the incidence of cars clumping together into rolling traffic jams.

Fat chance though.

same everywhere, driving up the 4 lane part of the A1 early or late with little traffic and there will be people just sat in lanes 2 and 3 ...on their own ...so you overtake and pull back into lane 1 and they still sit there

I agree, works in the US so why not over here - allow any lane to overtake....

I thought you could pass in any lane already, providing you don't move to a left hand lane specifically to over(under)take. If you are already progressing in any lane safely and within the speed limit you don't have to slow down if someone's moving slower than you in a lane to your right

Only in congested conditions. If not congested then you are not supposed to pass another vehicle on its left or BiB may consider it as a careless or inconsiderate driving. Mind, the same can be said for the lane hogger too. It's an issue that is begging to be improved upon.

Space Corp directive 268 refers.

You did well keeping up Neil - there are people out there who actually believe I'm a slow driver wink

I hear - and agree with - what other people are saying but I would add one caveat. Have you ever driven on the inside lane confused

There is a section as you leave the M56 and head south onto the M6. I kid you not but for several miles you do not need to use your steering wheel. you can (almost) settle into the groove moulded into the surface by the HGVs.

No problem to me but I'm sure that our 'Sunday Diver' brethren may find such places a wee bit disconcerting smile

This is one of my biggest gripes.... Middle lane hoggers make my blood boil.
They do nothing but hold up the whole motorway!

I undertake all day long... wink

As the police now focus on fines they can collect automatically, the chances of anyone being caught lane hogging are close to zero.

It also means that the chances of being caught undertaking are close to zero, so like many others, I've now started to undertake. Pity is, the people you undertake don't realise you've had to break the law because of them, if they even notice you they will just assume its OK to go past people on either side, because they have no clue how the lanes are meant to be used.
