As the police now focus on fines they can collect automatically, the chances of anyone being caught lane hogging are close to zero.

It also means that the chances of being caught undertaking are close to zero, so like many others, I've now started to undertake. Pity is, the people you undertake don't realise you've had to break the law because of them, if they even notice you they will just assume its OK to go past people on either side, because they have no clue how the lanes are meant to be used.
That's an accurate assessment!
With the creation of the Highways Agency Traffic Officers (who do not have an enforcement role!) most County Forces stopped routine patrolling of the Motorway Network. They do however maintain a response capability and may occasionally conduct operations to boost their crime detection rates. But they're very unlikely to deal with the middle lane drivers or those undertaking.

I thought you could pass in any lane already, providing you don't move to a left hand lane specifically to over(under)take. If you are already progressing in any lane safely and within the speed limit you don't have to slow down if someone's moving slower than you in a lane to your right
+1

Whether it is >entirely< legal or not I do this. And will stare at the middle lane hogging retard with a shake of the head while I do so. 50% of the time they puill back into the inside lane afterwards smile

People will say 'what if they pull into the inside lane as you're going past' but this is a judgement call and more often than not I'll go around the outside anyway. Body language and the fact they've been in that lane for the last 10 miles suggest they won't change lanes unprompted.

I used to do the lane 1 to lane 3, then back to lane 1 thing, but now I just go past in the inside lane. I also often look across at the driver , who normally looks back with a "what ?" look on their face.

I think it was Mr J Clarkson that said something like "If there is room enough for me to undertake, there is room enough for you to pull in". Correctington.

There still seem to be quite a few unmarked cars and bridge cameras about. Well I've bumped it to them, so to speak!

I hear - and agree with - what other people are saying but I would add one caveat. Have you ever driven on the inside lane confused
There was a similar inside lane, heavily grooved on the M25, but steering is OK again now after resurfacing.

I do sometimes drive my Aston Martin at 60mph in the inside lane (for amusement). Never passed by any car that can exceed 180 mph, so there is nothing to prove to anyone.

It does allow other motorists more time to admire the Beauty.
The Power and that 'other one', are for different occasions.

I dare say when they get there they think something like "My goodness I'm here already and I can't remember a thing about the journey!"

There are an inordinate amount of F**k Wits on the roads I'm afraid. None in Aston's of course, wink

Mate of mine once got pulled over for "undertaking" on a dual carriageway. Road was virtually empty and the bloke had been in the outside lane for ages. 3 points for careless driving IIRC.

I must say I have less of a problem when driving the Aston than other cars. Most drivers seem to pull over anyway when they see the car in the rear-view mirror (doesn't work when it's dark, though!).

I'd fight that in court - it isn't careless, it was premeditated and if the speed was on or under the legal limit, I don't see plod's problem.

I do remember getting het up behind a middle-lane hogger many years ago, sat there behind her for a quite a few miles (outside and inside lanes clear, 3 lane road) winding myself up pointlessly, no idea why.

Eventually went down the inside, gave her the 'stare and headshake' and well-pleased with my work continued on. Checked my mirror and there was a marked car 3ft off my back bumper weeping

They moved into the middle lane, wagged the finger at me and continued on their way. The hogger moved back into the inside lane as well and life went on smile

Maybe I was lucky not to get a CD ticket...

I just hope that driver was given the appropriate penalty for such disgraceful driving.

Not just lane hogging, but retaliatory braking as well.

No excuses, no 'slapped wrists'.

The reason these idiot's drive in the wrong lane is simple, they dont
understand what the lanes are for. They think the nearside lane is for slow traffic, and the 3rd lane is for fast traffic, so if they stay in the middle lane they will be about right. They just dont understand that lanes 1 and 2 are for overtaking only. Unless you are overtaking something you should be in lane one. Simples. Why this isn't instilled in people when they are learning, I dont understand.

Because learners don't do motorway driving and driving schools want as many passes as possible so they just practice the test routes over and over again and don't bother to discuss motorway driving!

My daughter was taught to drive by a man who teaches the police driving instructors and he insisted that she do two other tests. He also didn't drive on any test routes until he was confident she could drive well. She passed her basic driving test, then she did Pass Plus (which included motorway driving) which she passed and then she did the Advanced test which she passed.

I think Pass Plus should be a compulsory secondary driving test so that motorway driving and etiquette are learnt.

She keep asking to drive the Aston which I am avoiding as she'll probably drive it better than me!

Hmm, wonder if I could put Mrs Yeti through that without her getting a lob on? scratchchin
