Just having a fb "discussion" on AM reliability.

His statement-
"Beautiful to look at, a bloody nightmare to live with everyday..."

Naturally I opposed this!

I said that yes the older cars from the 90's had reliability issues.
But today's cars (the Gaydon group of vehicles) are very reliable, and certainly very easy to live with. As long as you look after your car (servicing and maintenance) then it's no different from any other prestige marque.

Having owned 2 different Astons I feel my experience on this matter is sound.
Any one else agree/disagree?

Ask him what facts/experience he is basing his statement on wink
ETA - Depends on what you mean by reliability as well, both my Vantages have had a plethora of warranty niggles, both have failed to start on me. But neither have ever left me at the roadside or needed recovering (tempting fate now?)

A reputation that will take a generation or longer to shift; think rusty Alfas, rubbish Skodas, Ferraris that are not to be driven daily or reliable Volkswagens!

People's perceptions are hard to change, but I would say you are spot on. They have niggles, what cars (especially limited numbers hand finished cars) don't.

DB7 at Bloxham was a step forward from Newport Pagnell and then the Gaydon cars were a massive leap forward in technology / architecture and reliability.

Kick your FB mate in the head yes

My Newport Pagnell beauty has turned out to be far more reliable than my previous Mercedes. People occasionally see me admiring my engine and think otherwise, but they are wrong!

Steve, I've run my 2007MY V8V as a daily drive for 14 months, excepting being snowed in (summer tyres) it's been my commuting / shopping / nipping out / drive to Scotland / taking people to the airport car, day in day out.

I've had one issue with an ABS sensor (still drivable), replaced a duff battery before it died completely (didn't let me down) other than that it's had it an annual service and been totally reliable. I've passed through 40k miles easily with the original clutch and engine, nothing has fallen off smile

My wife has a VW golf which has had most of the fuel system replaced, the EGR valve, wheel bearing, 3 x coil packs, AC compressor... I know which one I would trust to get me from A to B!

Hi Neil, is the reliability as a result of your Vanquish having a good fettle at BR as you explained when we met in Gaydon the other weekend? I have always believed that giving TLC to something so fragile always assists in maintaining an antique lol biggrin

I had a DB7 Vantage... no issues other than coil pack replacement.
Now have the Vantage V8 , Almost a year... and have spent money.... but no question of reliability......I feel as confident in it as I do in my Q7 in that respect... and a whole lot better.
The sense of anticipation of getting in it and driving it to work this morning is comparable to waking up on Christmas morning when I was young (I'm now 52!).And I feel like this every time I drive it.

Does your FB friend have green eyes ?

V8V owned for 2 years driven around Europe, racetracks and alike and I had a warranty issue on a clutch plate issue, but like others it never let me down.

V12V, driven carefully everywhere, never been near a track and NEVER EVER used as a getaway car nono has been reliable. Well the reliable bit was truthful. So give your friend a pat on the head and tell him to go away.

6 years, 60K miles and no breakdowns

a few niggles, just like ANY other car you own long term

funny how people get these perceptions, usually based on hearsay, then quote them like facts

the internet is a good tool for research, but also a wonderful too for spreading misinformation...it really amplifies the old "I know a friend of a friend who had one and it always broke down so he sold it";)

Like others mine had several fixture and fit issues under warranty but that's all. Vantage was the top of a reliability survey for cars failing first mot (all makes) and db9 was in to ten top survey was in last 12 months . I saw another survey where Porcshe were 36th out of 37 for reliability despite many claims on that forum about AM cars being worse . My wife's Z4 was recovered twice, had had numerous issues and an engine rebuild at 23000 miles. Vantage had been much better up to now! I think it's old perceptions of the make.

Nothing fragile about the Vanquish Dave. BR were just keeping it perfect, no major work required apart from the steering rack when I first became its custodian

I think that many issues are caused by the owners themselves.

Storing them on driveways in all conditions, failing to look after them, failing to drive them correctly, failing to do basic maintenance on them, failing to clean them properly or on a regular basis......I could go on.

st.....I think I've just described myself biggrin

On a more serious note, having issues with the car is only one side of the coin. How they are dealt with and fixed is the flipside.

The AM Dealer network is the BEST I have ever dealt with (albeit not perfect). I'm about to jump ship away from BMW in June after 12 years and 14 cars with them simply because their Dealer network is poor frown

All cars have issues from time to time David.

I have actually witnessed 2 occasions of screaming arguments at my BMW Dealer in Chester regarding the really poor service they give whilst under the original warranty. You have to jump through so many hoops just to get acknowledgement that your car is broken.

Do I become a Knob and get an Audi? Do I trust Merc? No chance.

Renault Dealership 400 yards away is looking very appealing smile
