Interesting comment. How so?

I drove a V12V 7-speed manual and I noted the same thing versus a V12V 6 speed manual. Would be interesting to compare notes on different models. For me, the fuel cut off and engine braking is part of the go-kart attraction...

I'm new the Aston Martin forum and I've found this thread very interesting, having just purchased a 2019 registered new model Vantage at 5 months old. I guess I'm the type of customer Aston Martin's looking for, as I traded in my 911 Turbo (991.2) and owned a McLaren 570S prior to that.

Firstly I'd have to say just how delighted I am with the Vantage, it's simply awesome. It's quick, not quite as fast as the 911 Turbo or 570S, but plenty quick for the road. From 60 MPH to 130 MPH it's as quick as a sports series McLaren. If you've not driven one, I don't think performance will be an issue. I found the 911 Turbo fast but bland, to the extent that the only enjoyment was going quickly. At no time did I look at it with affection in the way I do my Vantage. It was a cold experience, one where the enjoyment levels it offered did not match my expectations. It simply did not feel special.

The McLaren offered thrills in many ways, but I suffered corrosion problems within 12 months of buying it new, which left a bitter taste and a large depreciation hole in my wallet. However it did make you feel special every time it was driven. These are best bought at 12 months old, that's where the real value is.

When it came to replacing my 911 Turbo I considered many, many options, and each time the new Vantage was near the top of the list. After being stung with my McLaren 1st year depreciation, I'd made up my mind to source my next car from the nearly new category. A few weeks of watching the market to find a colour inside and out I liked, then I stumbled across a 2019 ex-factory car which had everything I could have hoped for, including some options I didn't even know existed. A deal was made over the phone with the lovely folk from Newcastle, with a tremendous saving compared to new, making this near £150k spec cheaper than a new 992 4S with some options. In my opinion there's absolutely no comparison. With a 5 years service pack as well, it was almost too good to be true.

1,000 miles later and I can only say positive things about my Vantage. It's stunning to look at, sounds amazing, steers beautifully, feels special on the inside and is a joy to own. The only part of Vantage ownership which I'm still getting used to is the almost complete lack of engine braking, but otherwise this car lives up to the hype. I couldn't recommend it enough, and as a nearly new car with a big saving, there's little out there that offers it's blend of exclusivity, performance, head turning looks and refinement.

Thanks a lot for your perspective. Very good to hear and that is a great colour.

The lack of engine braking took me by surprise at first. It's feels quite weird coming off the throttle as you approach a corner and the car doesn't slow down unless you apply the brakes. In my 2 previous cars there was a usable amount of engine braking but perhaps that's because they had dual clutch boxes and the Vantage has a more traditional auto set up.

I've a track day set up for the end of August and I'm excited to see how it compares. There's certainly plenty of grip, and surprisingly the steering is much less inert feeling than my 911 Turbo, but not on the 570S level. I'm sure it'll be fun and I'll post some feedback on the forum.

Thanks. I was told my Vantage was previously driven by the vice president of global design for Aston Martin. This may account for the lack of dreadful colour combinations it doesn't suffer from. It's all either grey or black and has the over priced carbon badges. I fell in love with it from day 1.

I have just bought a Vanquish Volante in that colour combo. Picking it this afternoon (cant wait) I think it's a fairly rare colour and I have heard 'primer' But I think it looks great. I also traded from a 991.2 GTS. Fantastic car, but lacks emotion.

ituned - congratulations that is stunning.

I found your comments on the 570S interesting. I'm currently a 540C owner and naturally looking at what's next. I owned a couple of previous gen Vantages and must admit I absolutely love the looks of the new one.

How does it compare as a daily? I use the 540C for everything, and it's a brilliant all rounder.

Hi Justin, I used my 570S as a daily and I thought it was surprisingly good, with great visibility and the biggest problem was the dead brake pedal, probably due to the ceramics. The Vantage is a little better I feel. Visibility is limited due to the high dash board and small side windows but you get used to it quickly. The auto gearbox definitely copes better in traffic, its super smooth. I also feel the climate control works more efficiently to cool the cabin than the McLaren, and the Mercedes media system is far easier to operate than iris. Both cars ride quality is similar once you are over 50 mph and the steering is less busy, but doesn't offer the same level of McLaren feedback.

I always felt that my 570S was unstable under hard braking, especially if the road surface was anything other than billiard table smooth. The car would not inspire confidence and I had it checked over to ascertain if there was a fault. I also felt the traction control interfered a bit too much but the Vantage is similar. The McLaren would definitely beat the Vantage off the line in a drag race, but in real world driving the Vantage offers almost identical acceleration but does not suffer the same turbo lag. I compared my Vantage to a friends 570GT last weekend for acceleration, and from 50/60 MPH upwards they were inseparable, which surprised me a little. The power is available from below 2,000 rpm in buckets, whilst the 570S needed 3,500 rpm to really fly. Supercar owning friends have been surprised at just how punchy the Vantage is, as have I.

Another area where you'd notice an improvement is the noise of the Vantage. It's absolutely epic, from idle to the redline, I love it. It does enhance the ownership experience. As for practicality the Vantage is a bit more flexible with it's rear hatch and big boot but I did manage to squash an amazing amount of stuff into my Mclaren, and let's face it, you don't buy either for their luggage holding capability.

Ultimately they are both great cars. They turn heads, provide smiles and deliver real driver enjoyment every mile. The Vantage is a better all rounder, feels more solidly built and compromises a little less but still makes you feel you are in something very special. The McLaren is a more committed junior supercar. Both feel way more exciting and special to own than my previous 911 Turbo (991.2).

I'd highly recommend either, and in my opinion they are best bought at a few months old, so you can enjoy the considerable savings.

Thanks for that, much appreciated. I'll need to have a shot of one. I don't have the ceramics and think the standard brakes are a joy to use on road. Never been on a track with it.

I went out in the new DBS and it has reignited my Aston passion. What a machine!

Congrats on an interesting write up and a great looking Vantage. A few years ago when this colour first popped up I was certainly in the glossy primer grey group, but it has definitely grown on me quite a lot and I think it looks terrific on your Vantage, and goes really well with those over-priced carbon badges!

Really interesting feedback and comparison. I bought a 570 spider last year on the basis that I had quite a wait before my factory ordered vantage would be delivered. I expected to sell the 570 once the vantage arrived, however I immediately fell in love with the McLaren. The feel of the car is just so good. IMHO I’d say the 570 was ‘better’ in every department except the sound so it’s interesting to hear your preference for the Vantage given the direct comparison.

Over time the vantage has grown on me and makes a great all round drivers car. Whilst sales in UK have clearly not been what AM hoped for, it does mean that owners are driving something which is quite a rare sight on the road (I’ve only ever seen 1 other on the road in the last year) and like the OP the reaction to the car has always been excellent. It gets lots of very positive comments.

I find the 570 to be far more composed handling than the vantage. That’s not to say the vantage is bad, it’s not, it’s excellent, but the 570 has the uncanny ability to make uneven B roads feel flat and smooth by comparison. So essentially I prefer the damping on the Mclaren.

Both are great cars and at current prices I think both are a bit of a bargain when bought nearly new.

Thanks for the feedback. My comments were related to using both as a daily, as the previous contributor was using a 540C as one and asked for a comparison.

I’d agree that the McLaren steers better, and it is more composed when you are driving very enthusiastically, but there’s not much out there that’s anywhere near as good. The Vantage also feels a bit wider on fast B roads and it does feel significantly more heavy and less chuck-able.

However the Vantage is miles better than I expected, the build quality is streets ahead in my opinion, and it has bags of character and a big fat personality. I’ve enjoyed owning both and as we agree, offer tremendous value in the nearly new car market. Unfortunately my relationship was soured with my 570S due to significant corrosion issues at 12 months old.
